Event-by-event correlation between orbital cosmic rays and ground-level air showers

Establish an event-by-event correlation between cosmic-ray particles detected by an orbital detector and their associated extensive air showers observed by ground-based observatories.

Background

The paper identifies a scientific objective of correlating high-energy galactic cosmic-ray primaries detected by the RUBIK detector aboard the ROMEO satellite with the extensive air showers that those primaries may generate and that are observed by ground-based detector arrays. Such a correlation would connect an orbital particle measurement with a contemporaneous ground-level shower on an event-by-event basis.

The authors state that this correlation has not yet been experimentally demonstrated. RUBIK is intended to provide the orbital particle direction and timestamp needed to investigate the correlation, but the paper does not report a completed experimental demonstration, leaving the problem unresolved.
