Effect of post-validation solution discussions on validation rigor

Determine whether addressing the instructional gap through a shared discussion of solutions would raise the standard of peer validation in a cascading peer validation system.

Background

The study examines a large, cascading peer validation system in which students who have been validated gain authority to validate other students. Survey responses indicated that participants perceived some validations as occurring without adequate examination and most frequently selected post-validation discussion of solutions as the change that would make validation more rigorous.

The authors explicitly state that the available self-report data cannot establish whether a shared solution-discussion session would reduce lax validation or raise the validation standard. They identify a future comparative study, with validation-graph instrumentation and cohorts with and without such a session, as the appropriate way to investigate this unresolved question.

We cannot demonstrate from these data that such a session would reduce lax validation, and we do not claim as much; what we can report is that it is what participants requested, and that they requested it regardless of whether they had reported a lapse themselves.
