Dynamical origin of the segmented Milky Way spiral structure

Determine whether the fragmented and partially connected spiral morphology observed among young clustered populations in the Solar neighbourhood originates from the dynamical formation mechanism of the Milky Way’s spiral pattern, rather than from subsequent evolution.

Background

The paper finds that young open clusters and young stellar object groups in the Solar neighbourhood are better described as fragmented, spiral-like segments with partial connections than as smooth continuations of a few global logarithmic arms. Density-supported Bayesian Gaussian Mixture Model segmentation and Minimum Spanning Tree analysis both identify local branches, intermediate structures, and possible bridge-like features, particularly between the Local and Sagittarius reference arms.

The observed morphology alone cannot distinguish among competing physical explanations, including transient material spiral features, local instabilities, differential shear, feedback, and other forms of subsequent dynamical evolution. Resolving this issue requires additional age, vertical, and kinematic information beyond the spatial morphology analysed in the paper.

The dynamical origin of this morphology remains an open question.
