Determine the origin of UDG32

Determine whether UDG32 formed from ram-pressure-stripped material associated with the southwestern tail of NGC 3314a or is a pre-existing ultra-diffuse galaxy interacting with that tail.

Background

UDG32 overlaps spatially with the southwestern neutral-gas tail of NGC 3314a, and its line-of-sight velocity is consistent with that of a co-spatial Hα filament. These observations provide support for a possible formation scenario in which stripped gas gives rise to an ultra-diffuse galaxy.

However, the reported high metallicity and intermediate stellar age of UDG32 are more consistent with a pre-existing ultra-diffuse galaxy than with a recently formed object originating from ram-pressure-stripped gas. The paper therefore leaves the physical origin of UDG32 unresolved, while noting that formation from pre-enriched stripped material cannot be excluded.

The origin of UDG32 is uncertain but RPS is one of the proposed scenarios to explain it.
