Determine whether FLαRE-z7 resides in an overdensity of faint galaxies

Determine whether the FLαRE-z7 ionized superstructure resides in an overdensity of faint galaxies with ultraviolet magnitudes approximately $M_{\rm UV}\lesssim -17$, whose abundance around the JADES-GS-217704 sightline is currently unknown.

Background

The paper measures the galaxy environment around the FLαRE-z7 sightline using a flux-limited sample selected from the JADES DR5 photometric catalog. Although the measured sample shows no significant overdensity, it is sensitive primarily to relatively bright galaxies.

The authors explicitly note that faint galaxies with MUV≲−17M_{\rm UV}\lesssim-17 may be important contributors to cosmic reionization, but their abundance near FLαRE-z7 is not constrained by the available data. Consequently, the possibility that the ionized superstructure lies within an overdensity of faint galaxies remains unresolved.

Those faint galaxies might be the primary contributor to reionization (e.g., ), and we cannot rule out the scenario that FL$\alpha$RE-z7 resides in an overdensity of faint galaxies.
