Controlled comparison of conditioning-mask effects and appearance realism

Conduct a controlled comparison using matched conditioning masks to separate the effects of mask-distribution differences from appearance realism when evaluating the downstream utility of DiffuMT against the parametric SynthMT baseline.

Background

The train-on-synthetic experiment conditions DiffuMT on real expert masks, whereas the parametric SynthMT baseline uses procedurally generated masks. Consequently, differences in downstream segmentation performance may arise from both the realism of generated appearances and differences in mask distributions.

A matched-mask comparison would isolate these factors by evaluating the competing generators under the same conditioning masks, clarifying whether DiffuMT’s downstream advantage is attributable specifically to appearance realism rather than to the geometry or distribution of the masks.

References

Separating these two effects would require a controlled comparison on matched conditioning masks, which we leave to future work; likewise, generating synthetic masks that capture realistic microtubule geometry, so that the pipeline no longer depends on real expert masks at inference time, is nontrivial and is itself a direction for future work.
