Characterize boundedness and global minima for general bumblebee potentials

Determine, for a general smooth potential V(X) in the Minkowski bumblebee model with Maxwell kinetic term, whether the effective Hamiltonian contribution H_V = V(X) - 2B_0^2V'(X) is bounded from below and whether its global minimum occurs on the hypersurface X = x.

Background

The paper studies the bumblebee model with Lagrangian density L = -B_{\mu\nu}B{\mu\nu}/4 - V(X), where X = B_\mu B\mu. After imposing the Hamiltonian constraint, the potential-dependent part of the Hamiltonian is H_V = V - 2B_02V'. Its boundedness from below is necessary for stability, and a global minimum at X = x with x > 0 produces a timelike vacuum expectation value and spontaneous Lorentz-symmetry breaking.

The authors establish some necessary and sufficient conditions for subclasses of potentials, including cubic and certain higher odd-power potentials, but do not give a complete characterization for arbitrary smooth V(X). The unresolved issue is therefore to determine both stability of the Hamiltonian and whether the desired Lorentz-breaking hypersurface is the actual global minimum for general potentials.

References

For general choices of $V(X)$, it is surprisingly tricky to determine whether or not ${\cal H}_V$ is bounded from below and whether it assumes its global minimum at $X = x$.
