Bound the resource requirements of exact catalysts

Bound the Schmidt rank and entanglement of an exact-return catalyst that achieves the proven second-order improvement in finite-block entanglement concentration for bipartite pure states.

Background

The paper proves that, for every nonuniform bipartite pure state and fixed nonzero error tolerance, an exact entanglement catalyst can reverse the usual negative second-order finite-size correction in entanglement concentration. The proof establishes only the existence of a finite-dimensional catalyst through catalytic majorization and does not quantify the catalyst's physical size or entanglement.

The unresolved problem is therefore to determine explicit upper bounds, scaling laws, or optimal trade-offs for the catalyst's Schmidt rank and entanglement required to realize the second-order improvement. These bounds would clarify the operational feasibility and physical cost of the catalytic advantage.

References

While we have proven the existence of a catalyst that secures this second-order improvement, quantifying the physical resources required to construct it---specifically bounding its Schmidt rank and entanglement---remains an important open challenge.
