Wilson Line Schur Index in 4D SCFTs
- Wilson Line Schur Index is the supersymmetric index in the Schur sector for 4D SCFTs computed with Wilson line defects, capturing gauge-invariant observables.
- It employs localization techniques and matrix model integrals with character insertions to analytically incorporate 1/2-BPS Wilson line defects on S³×S¹.
- Finite-N corrections and giant graviton/brane expansions reveal the interplay between defect contributions and holographic duality in supersymmetric theories.
Searching arXiv for recent and foundational papers on the Wilson line Schur index and closely related line-defect Schur indices. I will use the available arXiv search capability to verify the most relevant literature on Wilson-line-decorated Schur indices, line-defect correlators, and giant-graviton/brane expansions. The Wilson line Schur index is the Schur-sector superconformal index of a four-dimensional supersymmetric theory in the presence of supersymmetric Wilson line defects. In the most common realization, the defect wraps the temporal of , and gauge invariance on compact leads naturally to conjugate insertions, often placed at the north and south poles of . In SYM, the fundamental example is the Schur index with a fundamental Wilson line and an anti-fundamental Wilson line; in class- theories, the same protected quantity is often represented by a network defect on the UV curve rather than by an elementary loop in a weakly coupled Lagrangian frame (Gang et al., 2012, Imamura, 2024, Hatsuda et al., 2023, Watanabe, 2017).
1. Definitions and basic setup
For a $4d$ SCFT, the ordinary Schur index is the protected trace
and a line-defect Schur index is obtained by inserting a BPS line operator 0, producing a defect index of the form
1
In the language of half-line defects, one also encounters
2
where 3 is the Hilbert space on 4 in the presence of the defect configuration (Neitzke et al., 2017).
In 5 6 SYM, one convenient Schur-limit convention is
7
with the line-decorated index denoted 8. In the presence of 9-BPS Wilson lines, the symmetries generated by 0 and 1 are broken, so one lands on the Schur index after setting the corresponding fugacities to zero. The specific defect configuration studied most extensively is a pair of 2-BPS Wilson lines in the fundamental and anti-fundamental representations inserted at the north and south poles of 3, respectively (Imamura, 2024).
An equivalent 4 presentation of the same 5 theory uses
6
and the fundamental two-point defect correlator
7
The two notational systems are related in the literature by
8
This coexistence of conventions is standard rather than contradictory: it reflects different choices of fugacity basis for the same protected observable (Beccaria, 2024).
A closely related but distinct object is the Schur half-index with Wilson line insertions. In 9 0 pure 1 SYM, the half-index is defined on 2 with Neumann boundary conditions for the vector multiplet, and Wilson-line insertions produce matrix integrals and operator formulas that are analogous to, but not identical with, the full Schur index (Lewis et al., 20 Jun 2025). This distinction is important: the full Wilson line Schur index is a correlator on 3, whereas the half-index is a boundary observable.
2. Localization, matrix integrals, and character insertions
The essential localization fact is that a Wilson line wrapping the temporal circle enters the Schur matrix model as a character of the gauge holonomy. For a 4-BPS Wilson line in representation 5 at the north pole and its anti-line at the south pole, the localized line-operator index has the generic form
6
and in the Schur specialization one simply sets the additional fugacities to unity. This was already explicit in the general 7 line-operator formalism, where the line operator index was defined before specializing to the Schur limit 8 (Gang et al., 2012).
For 9 0 SYM in the Schur limit, the matrix-model insertion for a pair of Wilson lines in 1 and 2 is
3
and for the fundamental representation
4
A normalized version,
5
is often used; it is the expectation value of the character insertion divided by the ordinary Schur index without loops. The same work emphasized that conjugate insertions are required by Gauss-law constraints on compact 6 (Drukker, 2015).
In the 7 line-defect correlator literature, the same observable is frequently written directly as a holonomy integral with character insertions: 8 For the basic fundamental/anti-fundamental pair,
9
and the insertion is the adjoint character 0 (Beccaria, 2024).
A more general exact Fermi-gas treatment exists for 1 and 2 3 SYM. There the Schur line defect correlators
4
are rewritten in terms of a one-particle density matrix and determinant formulas. Antisymmetric and symmetric Wilson lines are generated by the standard symmetric-function generating functions
5
while charged Wilson lines correspond to power sums 6 (Hatsuda et al., 2023).
3. Exact methods and large-7 structure
At large 8, the Wilson line Schur index typically factorizes into the ordinary large-9 Schur index and a defect contribution interpreted holographically as a worldsheet fluctuation index. For the fundamental/anti-fundamental pair in 0 1 SYM,
2
with
3
This identifies the defect factor with the index of fluctuations of a fundamental string on 4 (Beccaria, 2024).
In the 5 convention for the same theory, the ordinary large-6 Schur index is
7
while the line-decorated answer is
8
In the unrefined limit 9,
$4d$0
This is the basic large-$4d$1 benchmark for finite-$4d$2 analyses (Imamura, 2024).
The Fermi-gas approach gives exact grand-canonical formulas and leading large-$4d$3 asymptotics. For the fundamental normalized expectation value in $4d$4 $4d$5 SYM,
$4d$6
and at leading large $4d$7,
$4d$8
For higher symmetric and antisymmetric representations, the same analysis leads to the large-$4d$9 generating function
0
checked explicitly for the first few representations and suggesting dependence only on the number of boxes at leading order (Drukker, 2015).
A complementary large-1 framework expands arbitrary Wilson-line correlators in power-sum variables. For charged Wilson lines in 2 3 SYM, the normalized two-point function is
4
and even-point functions factorize: 5 Using Newton identities and Jacobi–Trudi identities, this yields exact large-6 correlators for symmetric, antisymmetric, hook, rectangular, and in principle arbitrary representations (Hatsuda et al., 2023).
4. Finite-7 corrections, giant gravitons, and brane expansions
A major recent development is the reorganization of finite-8 Wilson line Schur indices into giant-graviton or brane sectors. For the fundamental/anti-fundamental pair in 9 0 SYM, explicit low-1 unrefined series were computed,
2
tending to the large-3 series. The leading finite-4 correction obeys
5
whereas the undecorated Schur index begins at one higher power. This shift is one of the central motivations for the giant-graviton description (Imamura, 2024).
The resulting proposal is a double-sum giant-graviton expansion
6
whose explicit form involves sums over wrapping numbers 7, worldvolume indices 8, line-decorated worldvolume indices 9, and semi-infinite string factors 00. The proposal is numerically checked up to
01
and in a 02-Taylor expansion the double sum collapses exactly to a simple sum (Imamura, 2024).
The single-giant sector can be computed in closed form by a finite-difference relation. If
03
then for the fundamental line pair
04
This implies exact factorization of the defect single-giant term against the wrapped-D3 contribution: 05 and after subtracting the disconnected contribution,
06
The plethystic-exponential factor matches the fluctuation index of two half-infinite strings ending on the giant graviton, while the prefactor 07 is reproduced by field theory but remains without a first-principles worldsheet derivation (Beccaria, 2024).
For anti-symmetric Wilson lines, the analogous holographic object is a D5-brane. If
08
then at large 09
10
while the large-11 limit is governed by the D5 fluctuation index
12
The proposed large-13 brane expansion is
14
and the finite-15 extension is a quadruple sum weighted by both 16 and 17. In a 18-series organization, these reduce to simple sums or double sums. The physical interpretation is in terms of disk D3-branes ending on the D5-brane, with finite-19 and finite-20 corrections carried by the wrapped disks 21 (Imamura et al., 2024).
5. Class-22, network defects, and chiral-algebra structure
In class-23 theories, the natural line-defect language is often not an elementary Wilson loop but a network on the UV curve. The Schur index with line insertion is then a network-decorated TQFT correlator. For example, in the 24 case the elementary pants networks
25
appear on a three-punctured sphere, and puncture-dependent skein relations generate exact identities among the corresponding line-inserted Schur indices. In free-theory examples, all elementary pants networks can reduce to flavor Wilson lines under these skein relations, showing that ordinary Wilson-line-like defects arise as special or reduced cases of the more general network formalism (Watanabe, 2017).
For 26 class-27 theories, closed-form expressions are known for all type-1 28 Wilson line indices. If 29 is an 30 class-31 theory with 32, then the spin-33 type-1 Wilson line index is
34
while
35
This shows explicitly that the Wilson line Schur index is a rational-coefficient linear combination of the ordinary Schur index and a non-vacuum character-like contribution built from 36 and puncture factors 37 (Guo et al., 2023).
The chiral-algebra interpretation makes this structure systematic. In the BRST/free-field picture, a Wilson-line insertion in representation 38 leads to
39
where 40 is a module of the associated chiral algebra. In general,
41
with rational 42. The 43 44 half Wilson line provides a simple example: 45 and this decomposes into a rational-coefficient combination of the vacuum and non-vacuum characters of the associated VOA (Guo et al., 2023).
A broader defect-chiral-algebra relation appears in half-line defect Schur indices. There one has an expansion
46
and the 47 values 48 define a map from the line-defect algebra to a Verlinde-like algebra. In the examples 49, 50, 51, 52, and 53, this map is linearly related to vacuum expectation values of the defects in 54-invariant vacua after compactification on 55 (Neitzke et al., 2017). This is not a statement about Wilson lines alone, but it places Wilson line Schur indices within the general algebraic structure of Schur defects.
6. Related limits: half-indices, modularity, and high-temperature reduction
The Schur half-index with Wilson lines furnishes a distinct but tightly related framework. For 56 57 pure 58 SYM, the half-index with Wilson insertions is
59
This observable admits a 60-oscillator realization: 61 and the commuting Wilson generators coincide with the commuting Hamiltonians of the relativistic open Toda chain. For the fundamental representation,
62
The half-index therefore supplies an operator-algebraic and integrable-systems realization of Wilson-line Schur observables, even though it is not the full Wilson line Schur index on 63 (Lewis et al., 20 Jun 2025).
A different limit is the high-temperature limit of genus-zero class-64 defect indices. For the 65 theory 66, the vortex-defect Schur index obeys
67
where the right-hand side is the 68-partition function of the 69 star-shaped quiver with an 70 Wilson line insertion
71
The Wilson-line character arises from the 72-Yang–Mills eigenvalue 73, whose high-temperature limit is
74
The same analysis also reveals a relation between the linear independence of genus-zero defect indices and the convergence range of the corresponding 3d Wilson-line partition functions (Pan et al., 2024).
This suggests a broader picture: Wilson line Schur indices sit at the intersection of localization, VOA representation theory, Fermi-gas methods, integrable systems, and holographic brane expansions. What remains incomplete is equally clear. For the fundamental giant-graviton expansion, the prefactors 75 and 76 required when semi-infinite strings end on giant gravitons have no first-principles microscopic derivation (Imamura, 2024). For Fermi-gas treatments of Wilson loops, leading large-77 behavior is under good control, but subleading canonical corrections remain difficult because continuum approximations introduce branch cuts (Drukker, 2015). For anti-symmetric lines, the brane expansions are proposed and strongly checked numerically, but a closed general formula for the full finite-78 coefficients is not yet available (Imamura et al., 2024). In class-79, Wilson lines are often only one corner of a larger network-defect category, and the exact boundary between ordinary Wilson loops, network operators, and their chiral-algebra modules remains theory-dependent (Watanabe, 2017, Guo et al., 2023).
