The notion appears in advanced data analysis, commutative algebra, singularity theory, neural networks, and scientific computation, with distinct technical meanings in each but underlying connections in their characterization of centrality, regularity, and the propagation or loss of meaningful information at increasing "depth"—statistical, algebraic, or compositional.

1. Vanishing Depth in Multivariate and Functional Data Analysis

The vanishing property of depth functions is a foundational axiom for centrality measures in multivariate and functional data. A statistical depth function D(q;P)D(q;P) assigns a nonnegative value to a query point qRdq \in \mathbb{R}^d and a finite point cloud PRdP \subset \mathbb{R}^d, quantifying the centrality of qq relative to PP. Zuo and Serfling’s axioms require that “vanishing at infinity” holds:

The same axiom underlies generalizations of projection depth for functional data in Hilbert space. The regularized projection depth Dβ(x;PX)D_\beta(x;P_X) for xHx \in H vanishes as x\|x\| \rightarrow \infty, under a mild geometric condition (nontrivial projection onto admissible directions), ensuring the depth at infinity reflects peripheral, noncentral elements in infinite-dimensional data structures (Bočinec et al., 23 Dec 2025). This property is not automatically present in many naïve functional depths, therefore its guarantee is substantial for robust statistical inference in functional data analysis.

2. Vanishing Depth in Computational Geometry and Robust Statistics

Classical depth functions, such as Tukey (half-space) depth, simplicial depth, Oja depth, and their generalizations, also exhibit vanishing at infinity. For example, Tukey depth becomes zero once qq escapes the convex hull of PP, and remains zero beyond. Simplicial depth also vanishes immediately outside the convex hull (Francisci et al., 2019).

Recent work extends classical depth by introducing smooth, strictly positive notions beyond the convex hull. The σ\sigma-simplicial depths, for σ>1\sigma > 1, maintain positivity just outside the support, enabling ranking and discrimination among “outsider” points, which classical simplicial or half-space depths cannot accomplish due to automatic vanishment to zero. In robust supervised classification and anomaly detection on high-dimensional data, nontrivial vanishing depth behavior outside the convex hull is crucial for meaningful ranking and consistency (Francisci et al., 2019).

3. Vanishing Depth in Homological Algebra and Commutative Algebra

In commutative algebra, vanishing depth connects algebraic invariants and cohomological properties. For a local ring (R,m)(R, \mathfrak m) and ideal IRI \subset R, the depth of R/IR/I or related modules often determines the vanishing range of local cohomology, Lyubeznik numbers, and other subtle invariants.

A central instance arises in the vanishing of cohomology governed by depth. The corrected Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for singular varieties establishes that Hi(X,L1)=0H^i(X, L^{-1}) = 0 for all i<δ=minxSing(X){depthxOX,x}dimSing(X)i < \delta = \min_{x \in \operatorname{Sing}(X)} \{\operatorname{depth}_x \mathcal{O}_{X,x}\} - \dim \operatorname{Sing}(X), revealing that both the minimal depth of the structure sheaf across the singular locus and the locus’s dimension together control the cohomological vanishing range (Arapura et al., 2018).

4. Vanishing Depth and Depth Formula in Module Theory

The depth formula is forced when the derived functors ToriR(M,N)\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M,N) vanish sufficiently. In particular, over regular local rings and complete intersection rings, this formula holds if MM and NN are Tor-independent: ToriR(M,N)=0\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M,N)=0 for i1i\ge1 (Celikbas et al., 2013). This “vanishing of Tor” leads not only to the depth formula but to rigidity phenomena, where the vanishing of a segment of consecutive Tors implies vanishing of all higher degrees, and hence, precise control of depth across tensor products (Celikbas et al., 2013).

The generalized formulations involving Tate homology and modules of finite Gorenstein or complete intersection dimension further refine the circumstances under which vanishing (or persistence) of depth is guaranteed or obstructed, deepening the links between module complexity, homological invariants, and depth-theoretic formulas (Christensen et al., 2011, Sadeghi, 2012, Celikbas et al., 2016).

5. Vanishing Depth in Neural Networks: Degeneracy and Gradient Flow

In deep learning, vanishing depth usually refers to degeneracies arising in very deep neural architectures, where representation or gradient signals degrade as the number of layers increases. Notable phenomena include:

  • Depth Degeneracy: In randomly initialized fully connected ReLU networks, the angle θ\theta_\ell between activations for distinct inputs collapses as depth \ell grows. At large \ell, all representations become nearly collinear, so the network approximates a constant function, impeding learnability and informativeness (Jakub et al., 2023). Finite-width combinatorial analyses show this collapse is exponentially fast in \ell with rate O(1/width)O(1/\text{width}), much faster than the O(1/)O(1/\ell) decay predicted by infinite-width mean field theory.
  • Vanishing Gradient: In deep feedforward and residual architectures, gradients vanish (or explode) exponentially unless the product of Jacobian singular values remains well-conditioned. This is the classic “vanishing/exploding gradients” problem. Dynamical isometry—achieved, for instance, via the ReZero initialization, which gates each residual connection by a scalar initialized to zero—yields identity Jacobians and prevents vanishing depth, enabling stable training of thousand-layer deep networks with rapid convergence (Bachlechner et al., 2020).

In vision-guided robotics, “Vanishing Depth” refers to the loss or (conversely) the stabilization of metric depth information in deep neural encoders. State-of-the-art architectures may fail to maintain depth precision when pretrained only on RGB data or when naïve depth encodings are employed. The Vanishing Depth adapter, featuring positional depth encoding (PDE), robustly fuses absolute depth into frozen RGB foundations while maintaining scale and distribution invariance, achieving superior performance on depth-centric tasks (Koch et al., 25 Mar 2025). PDE’s use of sinusoids tied to absolute depth scale, independent of local normalization, mitigates vanishing of metric information across domains and scales.

7. Limitations, Variants, and Open Problems

While vanishing (or nonvanishing) depth is a desired or undesired property depending on context, challenges persist. In statistical depth, designing functions that vanish only “at infinity” but not on relevant outliers near the data convex hull remains an open problem for many applications. In homological algebra, the characterization of rings and module pairs for which the depth formula (and hence vanishing or nonvanishing of certain depths) holds universally is still incomplete. In machine learning, fully capturing the tradeoff between expressivity at large depth and signal preservation requires further architectural and theoretical innovation.

The unifying principle across all domains is the precise mathematical and operational control of “depth”—as a measure of centrality, regularity, or informational flow—ensuring that vanishing occurs only where it is functionally or theoretically appropriate, and is avoided where it would impede structural, computational, or inferential goals.
