Techno Relational Aesthetics

Techno Relational Aesthetics is an “emerging orientation in interactive art that fuses technological mediation with interpersonal and intersubjective relationality.” It was formulated by Aven-Le Zhou to describe a shift within interactive art after the long dominance of a human–computer model centered on input/output, interface control, and system responsiveness. In this framework, interaction is reclaimed as reciprocity, mutual influence, communicative exchange, and intersubjective relation, while technology is treated not as a neutral channel but as an active mediator of relational form. The decisive claim is that “the aesthetic value arises not from a pre-designed output but from the evolving, situated relational dynamic” (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

1. Definition and conceptual scope

Techno Relational Aesthetics designates works in which human and technological agencies together co-produce aesthetic experience, and in which the artwork matters less as a discrete object than as a relational mediation. It extends interactive art beyond a one-user/one-system schema toward configurations involving multiple audiences, artworks themselves, or technologically organized collectivities (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

Zhou’s working definition is central:

“An interactive artwork involves at least two interactive subjects and/or components, such as the audience(s) and artwork(s), multiple audiences, or even artworks themselves, engaged in a process of exchange. This interaction, typically mediated through technology, may be either bidirectional (interactive) or unidirectional (reactive), and happens in an artist-designed way, intentionally or unintentionally. Crucially, the art unfolds through this relational dynamic, with the audience or artwork playing an active role in its realization.”

Several consequences follow from that definition. First, the ontology of interactive art becomes plural: the relevant units are subjects and components, not only a user and a machine. Second, the framework distinguishes interactive relations, which are bidirectional, from reactive relations, which are unidirectional. Third, the artwork’s event is no longer reducible to responsiveness; it depends on an evolving relational process. Fourth, the artwork becomes an interface of relational exchange rather than a passive display system (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

The concept is explicitly conceptual rather than mathematical. Although Zhou discusses “THE KURAMOTO MODEL (1,000 FIREFLIES),” no equations or formal model are introduced. The framework operates through historical argument, aesthetic synthesis, and case-study analysis rather than formalization (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

2. Genealogy of the “relational (re)turn”

The term “relational (re)turn” has a double meaning. It is a return to the earlier sociocultural breadth of interaction, and a turn toward relational interaction as the central category of contemporary interactive art. Zhou reconstructs a genealogy in which the concept of interaction initially referred to “the relation between two or more relatively independent things or systems of change which advance, hinder, limit, or otherwise affect one another” and to “mutual or reciprocal action or influence.” In sociology, from Simmel through Mead and Blumer, interaction referred to interpersonal and symbolic exchange; symbolic interactionism treated it as a communicative process in which people share experience. Cybernetics shifted emphasis toward feedback, control, and communication between organisms and machines, and human-computer interaction later formalized interaction as real-time exchange through interfaces such as GUIs, light pens, and mice. Interactive art inherited that paradigm, with the result that a broad sociocultural concept became a specialized technical logic (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

This historical narrowing is mirrored in art history. Twentieth-century art had already foregrounded participation, communication, openness, and process through Dada, Fluxus, Happenings, Kinetic art, OP art, and cybernetic art. Duchamp’s emphasis on the beholder’s creative role, Fluxus instruction-based participation, and the artist-audience-system redistribution described by Dinkla all indicate a broader field than machine feedback alone. Yet a later distinction became institutionalized: participation could remain social or performative, while interaction came to mean technologically mediated engagement. Zhou cites the formula that “artworks that use no digital technology are participatory art, and those that do are interactive art” only to show why such a strict separation is now insufficient (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

The institutional crisis of interactive art in the 2000s sharpened this argument. Ars Electronica, which institutionalized interactive art as a genre in 1990, became a site where the old model appeared exhausted. As interactivity diffused into everyday digital culture, technical responsiveness ceased to be sufficient in itself. Works such as LISTENING POST, which lacked direct audience interaction yet won the Golden Nica, destabilized rigid definitions. The 2013 Ars Electronica jury statement on PENDULUM CHOIR crystallized the shift: “interactivity should no longer be defined by a specific formal language prescribed by the vocabulary of the 1990s. Today, it is a set of strategies that can be situated in multiple contexts.” Zhou reads this as maturity rather than decline: interactive art no longer needs to be tethered solely to human-machine exchange (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

3. Aesthetic synthesis and theoretical foundations

Techno Relational Aesthetics is constructed as an overview of three prior aesthetic lineages. Against Kantian aesthetics, with its emphasis on contemplative distance and disinterested appreciation, Zhou follows Arnold Berleant’s aesthetic engagement, which stresses the holistic and contextual character of aesthetic appreciation and the active participation of perceivers. Berleant makes possible a move from object-centered appreciation to processual, embodied, merged aesthetic fields. Kwastek’s aesthetics of interaction extends this into digital art by theorizing reciprocal loops of action and reaction as co-creative aesthetic experience. Bourriaud’s relational aesthetics then broadens the field again by treating “the field of human interactions and its social context” as art’s “theoretical horizon.” Zhou’s proposal is a merging of these traditions: from contemplation to engagement, from engagement to interaction, and from interaction to relationality, while retaining technological mediation as constitutive (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

This synthesis also clarifies what Techno Relational Aesthetics is not. It is not simply Bourriaud plus digital media, because Zhou argues that Bourriaud’s relational aesthetics largely concerns socially engaged, often low-tech physical situations and does not systematically theorize technological mediation. It is also not simply Kwastek generalized, because Kwastek remains tied mainly to artwork-participant reciprocity. Techno Relational Aesthetics names works where technology “is not merely a neutral channel but an active agent shaping the relational space” (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

A related body of AI theory reinforces this shift from autonomous artifact to socio-technical relation. Virginia Dignum’s “Relational Artificial Intelligence” argues that AI must be understood as a “socio-technical ecosystem” and that what is right depends on the dynamics of the situation rather than detached rational optimization. Although that work does not theorize aesthetics directly, it supports a compatible claim: technological systems are constituted through relations among people, institutions, infrastructures, values, and contexts rather than by isolated technical function (Dignum, 2022).

4. Technological mediation, agency, and relational configurations

What makes the framework specifically techno is the status of mediation. In Zhou’s formulation, technology is an active mediator and co-producer of relationality. It stages, modulates, senses, stores, transmits, synchronizes, and infrastructurally enables relational form. The paper names biometric sensing, adaptive AI, networked systems, spatial interfaces, robotic apparatuses, smartphones, WiFi infrastructures, and body-based transmission systems as exemplary means by which relational space is shaped (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

The Ars Electronica case studies demonstrate several recurring configurations.

In AHORA, audience movement modulates a layered auditory environment, producing individualized yet co-present soundscapes. TUNNEL translates physical pressure into visible kinetic ripples, making collective bodily action spatially legible. PENDULUM CHOIR dramatizes negotiation among human performers, machine motion, and social spectatorship, while INFERNO turns robotic exoskeleton choreography into a social performance of distributed agency rather than mere control. In these works, aesthetic form emerges from bodies encountering one another through technologically structured environments (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

A second cluster foregrounds memory, affect, and interpersonal exchange. MIND generates what Zhou calls a “collective mood archive” by translating recent participants’ facial expressions into ocean-like audio. VOICE ARRAY materializes cumulative social memory through stored voices in illuminated nodes. ECHO turns virtual mirroring into an encounter with another person’s story. FUTURE KISS literalizes techno-mediated intimacy, and ISHIN-DEN-SHIN uses the human body itself as a conductive medium for whispered transmission. Here the artwork is neither self-contained object nor mere interface; it is a device for interpersonal, embodied, intimate exchange (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

A third cluster scales relationality outward. THE KURAMOTO MODEL (1,000 FIREFLIES) synchronizes thousands of radio-connected bicycle lights across a city. WEARABLE NETS visualizes social connection as a smartphone-mediated topology requiring collective spatial coordination. BI0FILM.NET transforms protest umbrellas into decentralized WiFi antennas, extending interactive art toward resistance and communication infrastructure. A plausible implication is that Techno Relational Aesthetics can describe not only gallery interaction but also techno-social practices in which infrastructure itself becomes the medium of collective relation (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).

5. Parallel developments in HCI, AI art, and relational media practice

Although Zhou’s concept is rooted in interactive art, adjacent research expands similar concerns into HCI, domestic computing, and AI-mediated encounter. A workshop-led HCI synthesis on the “Aesthetics of Connectivity for Empowerment” argues that aesthetics is “not only a subject in the science of sensual perception but also a mechanism for designing intelligent systems.” In that context, connectivity is said to reshape social interaction and to empower through “sensory engagement, emotional resonance, and social connectedness.” This suggests a design-theoretical extension of Techno Relational Aesthetics: connected systems become aesthetically consequential when technical functionality and relational experience are designed together rather than separately (Hu et al., 30 Mar 2025).

Several interactive systems instantiate this extension directly. “Mirror Ritual” shifts affective computing away from objective measurement toward “subjective perception,” using a CNN-based facial-expression classifier and GPT-2-generated poetry to invite participants to contextualize machine-produced language within their own lives. Emotion, in this setup, is not extracted as data but co-constructed through interpretive relation, and the audience is described as “an essential component” of the work (Rajcic et al., 2020). “Message Ritual” likewise presents a domestic lamp that listens to household conversation, transforms it into machine-generated poetry, and returns it by SMS the next morning; participants variously experienced the system as “housemate,” “good listener,” “muse,” and “spoken diary,” while the authors emphasize that the lamp is “foremost a social object, rather than a solitary artefact, a mere technological device or tool” (Rajcic et al., 2023).

AI-mediated object relations push the framework further. “A(I)nimism” proposes large language objects (LLOs), in which GPT-4 Vision, memory-based agents, light, sound, and touch allow mundane things to be encountered as if they had voice, memory, and perspective. The system is organized as a three-part ritual of Request, Conversation, and Transformation, and AI is positioned not as a neutral tool but as “a co-participant in meaning-making.” This does not simply anthropomorphize an interface; it reorganizes relation among human, object, and computational mediation (Mykhaylychenko et al., 29 Sep 2025).

These works do not define Techno Relational Aesthetics by themselves, but they show that Zhou’s framework names a wider formation: technologically staged relation has become a primary aesthetic medium across art, design, and AI systems.

6. Controversies, critical limits, and expanded relationality

A persistent misconception is that any increase in participation or networked connection counts as relational transformation. Zhou’s definition resists that simplification: interaction remains an artist-designed process, it may be interactive or reactive, and the relevant criterion is whether the artwork unfolds through relational dynamics rather than merely exhibiting responsive behavior (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025). A second misconception is that relationality is automatically emancipatory. Dejan Grba’s critique of tactical AI art argues that participation can remain extractive, platformized, or exploitative; distributed contribution does not by itself secure justice, and AI aesthetics must be analyzed through labor, institutions, and corporate power rather than only through visible interaction (Grba, 2024).

Network theory introduces a related critical question: under what conditions are technologically mediated relations legitimate? Olivier Auber’s account of the Poietic Generator treats the aesthetic event as relation among participants organized by network form and derives explicit cognitive criteria for legitimacy: A concerns access to and exit from the network, AB symmetry of treatment among agents, and ABC whether agents can recognize, trust, and respect each other as peers. In that vocabulary, alienation arises when participants cannot recognize their own trace in the emergent whole (Auber, 2017). A plausible implication is that Techno Relational Aesthetics cannot be evaluated solely by novelty, immersion, or conviviality; infrastructural asymmetry and hidden control are internal to its aesthetic and political stakes.

Another tension concerns anthropomorphism and posthuman rhetoric. Jelle van Dijk warns that “smart” objects often import a Cartesian humanist logic and invite metaphorical attributions of human qualities that obscure surveillance and asymmetrical power. From that perspective, the relevant design question is not whether objects appear more alive or social, but whether technologies support collectivity, relationality and community building (Dijk, 2020). This critique matters because techno-relational works can intensify attachment while masking the institutions and architectures that organize the encounter.

Zhou’s own future horizon is expanded relationality. Drawing on Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, the paper proposes movement beyond human-human intersubjectivity toward interspecific, ecological, and more-than-human entanglements involving plants, animals, microbes, AI, data systems, and planetary processes. In that expansion, interaction becomes “a site of encounter between heterogeneous entities, grounded in intersubjective responsiveness rather than control” (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025). Related work on permacomputing describes a comparable shift at the infrastructural level through relational aesthesis, where digital systems are made visible, palpable, and socially meaningful rather than seamless and immaterial; this suggests that techno-relational inquiry increasingly extends from interactive artworks to the design of infrastructures themselves (Smith et al., 29 May 2026).

Techno Relational Aesthetics therefore names more than a stylistic tendency. It identifies a reorganization of aesthetic thought in which technologies do not merely deliver content or register input, but compose the conditions of co-presence, shared meaning, memory, intimacy, synchronization, and collective world-making. Its central claim remains precise: contemporary interactive art is best understood not as interface behavior alone, but as technologically mediated relationality (Zhou, 22 Jul 2025).
