Packing-Conformal Maps

Updated 26 March 2026
  • Packing-conformal maps are continuous, surjective, and monotone transformations that collapse components of fractal packings via Moore quotients.
  • Uniformization theorems guarantee their existence under square-summability conditions, generalizing classical results like Koebe’s and He–Schramm’s theorems for disconnected domains.
  • Their analytic and geometric properties, including transboundary modulus invariance and rigidity, offer new tools for studying removability and random planar maps.

Packing-conformal maps are a class of conformal-like mappings between domains whose boundaries are highly disconnected, such as Sierpiński carpets or the complements of disk packings in the Riemann sphere. These maps provide a direct generalization of classical conformal equivalence to settings where the traditional theory fails due to fractal or countably infinite boundary structure. The associated uniformization theory addresses problems spanning geometric function theory, analysis on metric spaces, and geometric group theory, with key applications to rigidity, removability, and the geometry of conformal loop ensembles.

1. Definition and Characterization of Packing-Conformal Maps

Let X=C^∖⋃i∈IpiX = \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \bigcup_{i \in I} p_i and Y=C^∖⋃i∈IqiY = \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \bigcup_{i \in I} q_i be Sierpiński-type packings of the Riemann sphere, where pi,qip_i, q_i are disjoint, non-separating continua (e.g., closed Jordan regions or points), indexed by the same set~II and with $\diam(q_i)\to0$. The Moore quotient map πX\pi_X (resp., πY\pi_Y) collapses each pip_i (resp., qiq_i) to a point, yielding a quotient compactum E(X)\mathcal{E}(X) (resp., E(Y)\mathcal{E}(Y)).

A packing-conformal map is a continuous, surjective, monotone map h:E(X)→E(Y)h:\mathcal{E}(X) \to \mathcal{E}(Y) with h(πX(pi))=πY(qi)h(\pi_X(p_i)) = \pi_Y(q_i) for every ii, possessing the following analytic representation: there exists a Borel function ρh∈L2(C^)\rho_h \in L^2(\widehat{\mathbb{C}}) such that for all curves γ∉Γ0\gamma \notin \Gamma_0 (modulus zero exceptional set),

$\operatorname{dist}\bigl(\pi_Y^{-1} h \pi_X(\gamma(a)), \pi_Y^{-1} h \pi_X(\gamma(b))\bigr) \leq \int_\gamma \rho_h\,ds + \sum_{i:\, p_i\cap|\gamma|\ne\varnothing} \diam(q_i)$

and

∫πX−1h−1(πY(E))ρh2 dΣ≤Σ(E∩Y)\int_{\pi_X^{-1} h^{-1}(\pi_Y(E))} \rho_h^2 \, d\Sigma \leq \Sigma(E \cap Y)

for all Borel sets E⊂C^E \subset \widehat{\mathbb{C}}, where Σ\Sigma is the spherical area measure. On any open U⊂XU \subset X with h(U)⊂Yh(U) \subset Y open, the induced mapping H:=πY−1∘h∘πXH := \pi_Y^{-1} \circ h \circ \pi_X restricts to a classical conformal map in the usual sense (Ntalampekos, 2022).

2. Uniformization Theorems and Existence Results

The principal uniformization result (Ntalampekos) states that for any Sierpiński packing Y=C^∖⋃iqiY = \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \bigcup_i q_i with closed Jordan regions or points qiq_i and $\sum_i \diam(q_i)^2 < \infty$, there exists a round packing X=C^∖⋃ipiX = \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \bigcup_i p_i (with round disks pip_i of the same combinatorial type as qiq_i), and a continuous, monotone, packing-conformal map H:C^→C^H :\widehat{\mathbb{C}} \to \widehat{\mathbb{C}} such that H−1(int⁡qi)=int⁡piH^{-1}(\operatorname{int} q_i) = \operatorname{int} p_i for each ii and with ρH∈L2(C^)\rho_H \in L^2(\widehat{\mathbb{C}}) satisfying the full transboundary upper gradient and conformality properties (Ntalampekos, 2022). If in addition YY is "cofat" meaning the qiq_i are uniformly Ahlfors regular, HH can be chosen homeomorphic.

This theorem subsumes and extends classical results:

  • Koebe’s uniformization theorem in the finitely-connected case,
  • He-Schramm uniformization for countably connected round domains,
  • Uniformization of Sierpiński carpets and certain fractals via disk packings,
  • Uniformization of CLE carpets (complements of conformal loop ensembles), answering a question of Rohde and Werness.

3. Structural and Analytic Properties

Transboundary Modulus Invariance: Transboundary modulus is preserved through packing-conformal maps ($\md_X \Gamma = \md_Y h(\Gamma)$ for any curve family Γ\Gamma), generalizing the extension of classical conformal modulus to spaces with boundary identified via packings (Ntalampekos, 2022).

Nondegeneracy and Compactness: The square-summability condition $\sum \diam(q_i)^2 < \infty$ ensures uniform lower bounds for modulus connecting non-degenerate continua, so no "macroscopic" continuum can collapse to a point in the limit. Compactness is obtained via Hausdorff convergence and diagonal Arzelà–Ascoli for families of monotone surjective set-functions (Ntalampekos, 2022).

Rigidity and Uniqueness: In full generality, uniqueness of packing-conformal maps is open; with YY cofat and homeomorphic to its round model, uniqueness up to Möbius transformation is guaranteed (Ntalampekos, 2022). Boundary correspondence is explicit: HH collapses pip_i to qiq_i and is constant on the complement of pip_i in any "thin branch" of the potentially degenerate pip_i. Rigidity results for circle domains (see [19] in (Ntalampekos, 2022)) are established using packing-conformal maps.

4. Examples and Applications: CLE Carpets and Fractals

Classical Sierpiński carpets with square-summable complementary diameters admit packing-conformal uniformizations to round Sierpiński carpets. For CLEκ_\kappa carpets (random Sierpiński carpets arising as the complement of conformal loop ensembles in the unit disk), Rohde–Werness established that the complementary disk diameters are almost surely in ℓ2\ell^2; thus, almost surely, there exists a round packing XX and a packing-conformal map H:X→YH:X\to Y as above (Ntalampekos, 2022).

These results extend to general Sierpiński-type fractals with sufficiently small hole diameters, providing a flexible uniformization machinery for non-smooth, highly disconnected boundaries. They supply tools for studying removability, rigidity, and boundary correspondence in metric and fractal contexts, as well as for applications in the geometry of random planar maps and quantum gravity.

5. Proof Strategies and Key Lemmas

The proof proceeds via approximation by finitely connected circle domains (using classical Koebe uniformization for each Yn:=C^∖⋃i=1nqiY_n := \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^n q_i), passing to the limit compactly (Arzelà–Ascoli plus ℓ2\ell^2 control over disk radii), and extracting a global packing-conformal map by limiting the inverses and verifying analytic and topological regularity.

Key technical ingredients:

  • Discrete-to-continuous modulus and coarea estimates facilitating the L2L^2 estimates on the analytic parts of the map,
  • Fubini-type estimates on spheres,
  • Collision lemmas (Bonk) for separation of continua,
  • Nondegeneracy lemmas for sequences of packings,
  • Discrete Arzelà–Ascoli for set-valued functions.

If YY is cofat, a topological rigidity argument shows that HH is a global homeomorphism (Ntalampekos, 2022).

6. Connections to Discrete Conformal and Packing Theories

Packing-conformal maps are the limit objects of discrete conformal maps on circle packings and generalized planar packings. They are closely related to the variational principles and convex energy frameworks for discrete uniformization (notably Bobenko–Pinkall–Springborn, Springborn–Schröder–Pinkall (Bobenko et al., 2010)), the circle-packing uniformization machinery on surfaces of arbitrary topology (Glickenstein et al., 22 Jul 2025), and the classical Rodin–Sullivan convergence paradigm. The analytic structure mimics and extends the modulus and Dirichlet energy frameworks to non-classical settings. This synthesis opens powerful new approaches to uniformization in metric, fractal, and random planar contexts.

7. Impact and Future Research Directions

Packing-conformal maps unify and extend a range of uniformization results across smooth, finitely-connected, countably-connected, and fractal-type domains. They provide analytic and geometric tools for questions in rigidity, geometric function theory on fractals, and the analysis of random surfaces, and inform ongoing research in the removability of fractal boundaries, unique ergodicity, and rigidity for metric circle domains. Future developments are expected in the extension to broader classes of packings, finer regularity (e.g., quasi-conformal analogues), stability and uniqueness in the non-cofat setting, and further applications in random geometry and quantum gravity contexts (Ntalampekos, 2022).
