4. Computational Complexity and Error Control

Raw application of the dynamic cavity equations leads to exponential memory and time complexity in the number of time steps and vertex degree. The MPS-based BDCM circumvents this limitation: after truncation, the working bond dimension MM empirically saturates to moderate values (typically M102103M \sim 10^2 \ldots 10^3 in kinetic Ising and similar models), provided temporal correlations decay fast enough (Barthel et al., 2015, Barthel, 2019).

Approximate per-edge-per-step costs are:

6. Extensions: Continuum-Time Limits and Model Classes

The BDCM/MPEM algorithms generalize naturally beyond synchronous discrete-time dynamics. When the transition kernel wiw_i depends on both current and next vertex state (as in certain continuous-time Markov processes or more complex update rules such as SIR epidemic models), the truncation and orthonormalization sweeps are adapted so that orthonormalization proceeds in the appropriate time order (typically right-to-left), while the remainder of the algorithm structure persists (Barthel, 2019). The edge message representation remains of the same MPS form, but with additional indices or dependency as needed.

The method is applicable to a range of stochastic models on networks including, but not limited to, kinetic Ising/Glauber dynamics, spin glasses, Boolean automata, and neural networks, provided the underlying network is sparse and locally tree-like.

7. Applications and Empirical Performance

Case studies focus on the kinetic Ising model (Glauber dynamics) on random regular graphs.
