Attribute-Specific Autonomy

Attribute-specific autonomy refers to the formalization, design, and operationalization of autonomy with respect to individual agent attributes rather than the agent as a whole. In this paradigm, autonomy is scoped to a particular property, capability, or module—such as mobility, task-selection, or personalization—governing an agent’s capacity to select among available “use-policies” for that attribute, often through both deterministic and nondeterministic mechanisms. The concept is foundational for the engineering of artificial agents, AI decision-support, robotics, human-AI interaction, and multi-agent cyber-physical systems, enabling nuanced control over agent behavior, oversight, and user experience.

1. Formal Models and Definitions

The canonical definition of attribute-specific autonomy originates with Sanchis’s “autonomy with regard to an attribute” model (0707.1558). Let an agent aa possess an attribute AA with a finite set of policies P={p1,,pN}P = \{p_1,\dots,p_N\}, N2N \geq 2. Autonomy with regard to AA holds if and only if:

  1. aa is endowed with at least two distinct use-policies for AA.
  2. aa has an internal “choice-module” MM that can select any piPp_i \in P and switch between them during its lifetime.
  3. MM is partially nondeterministic; even under identical input, its output M(x)M(x) is not a single-valued function of the input state xx.

Symbolically, if DD is a deterministic component and NN a nondeterministic component: M(x)=N(D(x)),M(x)P{p0}M(x) = N(D(x)),\quad M(x) \in P \cup \{p_0\} where p0p_0 is an “empty policy” (inactivity).

Sanchis articulates three orthogonal classification criteria:

  • Global vs. Partial: Attribute-specific autonomy is partial (2{A}\subset 2^{\{A\}}), as opposed to traditional global autonomy (2U\subset 2^U) affecting the entire agent.
  • Social vs. Nonsocial: The model is nonsocial; autonomy is defined without reference to other agents.
  • Absolute vs. Relative: The Sanchis model is absolute—either the agent has autonomy with respect to AA or it does not.

This model can be generalized to any attribute AA with a well-defined policy set and appropriate invocation/termination interfaces. The autonomy achieved is inherently modular: combining autonomy for multiple attributes requires independent choice modules for each and effective coordination strategies (0707.1558).

2. Measurement and Scoring Frameworks

Evaluating attribute-specific autonomy in practice requires explicit metrics. “Measuring AI agent autonomy: Towards a scalable approach with code inspection” (Cihon et al., 21 Feb 2025) decomposes autonomy into attributes grouped under “Impact” and “Oversight”:

  • Impact: Actions the system may take; environmental scope of action.
  • Oversight: How agent interactions are orchestrated/bounded; when/how human input is sought; agent observability/logging.

Each attribute is scored on a three-level ordinal scale (Lower/Middle/Higher autonomy), mapped to {0,1,2}\{0,1,2\} and normalized to [0,1][0,1]. Overall autonomy score is the mean of normalized Impact and Oversight sub-scores, supporting both continuous and tiered (Low/Medium/High) ranking.

This code-inspection method allows rapid, scalable, and low-risk evaluation of autonomy in agentic frameworks such as AutoGen, and supports attribute-level comparisons without requiring risky runtime evaluation (Cihon et al., 21 Feb 2025).

3. Engineering Patterns and System Design

The engineering of modular, reconfigurable agent stacks for attribute-specific autonomy is exemplified in task-specific robot navigation (Sanyal et al., 11 Mar 2025). Here, system autonomy is explicitly distributed across three modules:

  • Perception: Event-driven, SNN-based, with tunable parameters for each robotic platform.
  • Planning: Physics- and energy-aware, with dynamically selected cost functions and optimization routines according to the task descriptor.
  • Control: Switchable between classical PID and SNN-based controllers, supporting real-time synaptic adaptation.

A meta-control policy allows runtime swapping of module parameters, perceptions, and planners, effecting attribute-specific autonomy at Perception, Planning, and Control levels. Run-time reconfiguration demonstrably yields substantial reductions in latency and energy, with success rates tuned to the needs of individual environments and robot types (Sanyal et al., 11 Mar 2025).

4. Attribute-Specific Autonomy in Human-AI Collaboration

Attribute-specific autonomy is also central in human-AI collaborative decision-making, where its expression shapes user experience and team performance. Faas et al. (Faas et al., 2024) show that the choice-restriction attribute significantly modulates perceived autonomy, meaningfulness, and accuracy. Restricting user choice to a single approved option increases accuracy (approaching 100%) but decreases autonomy and perceived meaningfulness (by up to 0.8 scale-points, medium effect size). Restoring minimal choice (two options) largely recovers both motivational states and accuracy, demonstrating the power of tuning autonomy at the attribute level. Design guidance from this work emphasizes dynamic support for adjustable choice—never fully removing it—and periodic “autonomy breaks” to maintain long-term user agency and motivation (Faas et al., 2024).

Domain-specific (attribute-specific) autonomy is further articulated in analyses of decision-support in specialized domains (medicine, finance, education), where the erosion of skilled competence and authentic value-formation can arise from AI-driven deskilling or unconscious value shifts. Preserving such autonomy requires not only algorithmic improvements but also socio-technical interventions: role design, failure transparency mechanisms, structured reflective practice, and value-adaptive interfaces (Buijsman et al., 30 Jun 2025).

5. Declarative Specification and Modeling in Multi-Agent Systems

Within IoT/cyber-physical systems, the Autonomy Model and Notation (AMN) (Janiesch et al., 2020) explicitly treats autonomy as decomposable into twelve constitutive attributes (“constitutive characteristics”). These include:

  • Hierarchical agent composition
  • Explicit sensor and actuator interfaces
  • Directionality of interactions
  • Rules, goals, internal states
  • Capacity/attention constraints
  • Social and ethical self-concepts
  • Communication trust (reliability, conformity, security)
  • Task, veto, and notification event objects

Each attribute is represented as a first-class concept in AMN’s UML-style meta-model, enabling precise graphical specification and “dialing up/down” autonomy levels at deployment. This granular design supports context-dependent trade-offs, from hands-off automation to full human veto, tailoring system autonomy to regulatory, operational, or ethical requirements (Janiesch et al., 2020).

6. Attribute-Specific Autonomy in Representation Learning

Attribute-specific autonomy also manifests in machine learning for representation disentanglement and controllable personalization. “Omni-Attribute” (Chen et al., 11 Dec 2025) achieves open-vocabulary, high-fidelity attribute encodings for images by a dual-objective regime: a generative loss for fidelity to target attributes and a contrastive disentanglement loss for suppressing non-target attributes. This allows any attribute—specified by natural language prompt or explicit annotation—to be manipulated independently, with robust composition (e.g., transferring “hairstyle” while preserving “expression” and “lighting”). The architecture, data curation, and training schedule collectively ensure that autonomy is realized at the specific attribute level, granting external controllers or users direct and isolated influence over designated factors (Chen et al., 11 Dec 2025).

7. Broader Implications and Significance

Attribute-specific autonomy operationalizes a modular, fine-grained approach to agency in artificial and hybrid systems, shifting away from monolithic or global conceptions. This confers several advantages:

  • Granular control: Designers can restrict, enable, or dynamically tune autonomy for sensitive or critical functions without forfeiting agent utility in other dimensions.
  • Safety and oversight: Enables precise integration of human-in-the-loop mechanisms, logging, veto powers, and role-specialization by attribute.
  • Socio-technical integration: Supports sustained competence and value-authenticity for human users in AI-supported workflows (Buijsman et al., 30 Jun 2025).
  • Quantitative assessment: Facilitates scoring, ranking, and comparison of autonomous agent deployments by inspecting code or model architectures (Cihon et al., 21 Feb 2025).
