1. Steering Vectors: Definition and Role

A steering vector encapsulates the phase and amplitude profile needed to focus a multi-channel system (e.g., antenna array, microphone array, neural network) toward the direction, mode, or semantic attribute of interest. Optimality is guaranteed under strong duality conditions, with rank-one recovery strategies employed when the solution matrix is degenerate. This methodology produces beamformers robust to uncertainties, improves SINR, and requires no ad-hoc tuning of uncertainty bounds or diagonal loading (Khabbazibasmenj et al., 2010, Huang et al., 2018). Extensions incorporate similarity, norm perturbation, and ellipsoidal constraints to further enhance performance under anisotropic or unknown error distributions (Huang et al., 2018).

3. AVS Under Uncertainty: Distributionally Robust and Statistical Approaches

When steering vectors and interference statistics are subject to distributional uncertainty, AVS methodologies maximize worst-case SINR by optimizing over sets defined by moment constraints (mean, covariance):

Neural field-based AVS synthesizes steering vectors as continuous, complex-valued functions mapping direction and frequency to array response, trained directly on measured data and augmented with physics-informed models. Resolution-free models interpolate steering vectors across directions and frequencies not seen during training, outperform classical spatial characteristic function interpolation by preserving inter-channel phase differences and physical plausibility (Carlo et al., 2023). This methodology reduces calibration overhead and provides resource-efficient, adaptively steerable representations for real-time audio applications.

6. AVS Performance, Applications, and Trade-offs

AVS methods consistently outperform traditional, fixed-vector approaches under challenging conditions, including steering vector mismatches, propagation-induced distortions, compound Gaussian clutter, and model uncertainty. Trade-offs with control strength and output quality are rigorously characterized: higher intervention amplitudes yield stronger attribute control but degrade output quality, with optimal efficacy at moderate steering strengths, particularly when steering is combined with complementary alignment techniques such as prompt engineering (Braun et al., 30 May 2025). Current research highlights several extensions for AVS:
