Abstract: In this paper I want to review the current status of development of multi-pixel silicon-based avalanche photo-diodes operated in Geiger mode, also known as Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM). Particular emphasis is given to the application of this type of photo-sensors in high energy physics detectors.
