Validate the effectiveness of AURA-generated recommender fixes

Determine whether the user-genre-by-candidate-genre cross feature and the candidate-aware attention mechanism improve ranking for the diagnosed Genre Preference Mismatch cohort beyond the production baseline.

Background

AURA generated two candidate remediations for the dominant Genre Preference Mismatch category: an explicit user-genre × candidate-genre cross feature and a candidate-aware attention mechanism conditioned on a user’s genre-watch history. Offline evaluation on 1,911 Platform B sessions did not show improvement for either candidate, and global metrics remained within ±0.1% of the production-clone baseline across three independently trained days.

The paper explicitly treats these interventions as unresolved candidates rather than validated solutions. Further experimentation is needed to establish whether either modification can correct the diagnosed cohort-specific failure without degrading broader recommender performance.

Yet neither improved ranking on the diagnosed cohort (1,911 Platform~B sessions), and both tracked the production baseline to within run-to-run noise on aggregate metrics ($\pm$0.1\%, Table~\ref{sec:closed-loop}). Offline screening thus leaves the fix an open candidate: safe to iterate on, not yet demonstrated.
