Extension beyond linear reaction networks

Extend the spectral and coupling framework for long-time behavior to stochastic reaction networks that are asymptotically linear or genuinely nonlinear, thereby broadening the classification beyond linear reaction networks.

Background

The paper’s classification relies on the first-order influx matrix, its spectral properties, conservation-law structure, and coupling arguments, all within the class of stochastic linear reaction networks. Many reaction systems of practical interest are only asymptotically linear or contain nonlinear reaction terms.

The authors explicitly identify extending their framework to these broader classes as an unresolved research problem. Such an extension would test whether the paper’s spectral and coupling mechanisms remain effective outside the exactly linear setting.

References

Third, although the present classification applies to linear reaction networks, many reaction systems are only asymptotically linear or involve nonlinear reactions. Extending the spectral and coupling framework developed here to broader classes of stochastic reaction networks would provide a natural direction for future research.
