Residual finiteness of hyperbolic groups

Determine whether every hyperbolic group is residually finite.

Background

In discussing recent work on affine actions and related structural properties of hyperbolic groups, the authors reference the longstanding problem of whether all hyperbolic groups are residually finite.

This question is independent of the main results of the paper but contextualizes assumptions used in related literature (e.g., Drutu–Mackay) and remains a well-known open problem.

References

It is a well-known open question whether all hyperbolic groups are residually finite [DK18, §11.25].
