Origin of the early gate-defined covariance feature

Determine whether the early gate-defined covariance feature in the 10–300 keV prompt gamma-ray light curve of GRB 170817A originates from intrinsic source variability, the measurement and background process, or model dependence.

Background

The change-point Gaussian-process analysis identifies a covariance transition at approximately 0.24–0.27 s after the GW170817 merger, before the observed gamma-ray onset at 1.74 s. Because the feature is inferred from a phenomenological model applied to background-subtracted, binned count-rate data, its physical interpretation is not established.

The paper explicitly leaves unresolved whether the early transition reflects genuine variability of the astrophysical source, artifacts associated with measurement and background estimation, or dependence on the chosen Gaussian-process model. Resolving this issue would require additional statistical validation, including count-level modelling and simulation-based calibration.
