Nature of the supernova remnant 3C 397

Determine whether the supernova remnant 3C 397 is a core-collapse supernova remnant, particularly in light of its prominent bar and proposed shaping by a precessing pair of jets.

Background

The paper compares an H-shaped structure produced by its simulated precessing bipolar outflow with the morphology of the supernova remnant 3C 397. Previous work cited by the authors identified a signature of a precessing jet pair in 3C 397 and argued that the remnant originated from a core-collapse supernova.

However, the classification of 3C 397 is disputed. The simulated morphology supports a possible association between precessing jets and the remnant, but the paper does not resolve whether 3C 397 is in fact a core-collapse supernova remnant.
