Magnetic behavior and coupling of the Tb and Fe sublattices

Determine the magnetic behavior of the terbium and iron sublattices in monoclinic TbFe₂D₄.₂ and establish how the two sublattices are correlated.

Background

Earlier work on TbFe₂D₄.₂ identified a cell-volume contraction near 160 K, but the magnetization curves showed a continuous decrease characteristic of ferrimagnetic behavior. The authors state that the prior experimental results had not been fully analyzed, leaving unresolved the separate temperature- and field-dependent behavior of the Tb and Fe magnetic sublattices and the nature of their coupling.

The present study addresses this issue using complementary low- and high-field magnetometry together with neutron diffraction as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. The subsequent analysis proposes a ferrimagnetic structure and identifies distinct thermal changes in the Tb and Fe moments, but the explicitly stated unresolved problem is the determination of their individual magnetic behavior and correlation.
