Mesoscopic dynamics of helium-rain droplets

Characterize how helium droplets nucleate, grow, and redistribute helium in hydrogen–helium mixtures under gas-giant interior conditions.

Background

The paper applies the learned ab initio phase-field model to hydrogen–helium mixtures at pressures and temperatures relevant to Jupiter and Saturn. Although the model predicts the immiscibility boundary and demonstrates helium-rain simulations at mesoscopic scales, the underlying atomistic simulations cannot access the length and time scales required to resolve the full droplet dynamics. The authors therefore identify the mechanisms governing droplet nucleation, growth, and helium redistribution as unresolved.

References

How helium droplets nucleate, grow and redistribute helium therefore remains an open question.
