Equal Credit Across Visible Identity and World Region

Determine whether equivalent open-source software work receives equal credit across contributors’ visible identities and inferred world regions.

Background

The paper notes that GitHub evaluations depend on visible identity and geography, while its own analysis does not estimate region-specific differences in credit attribution. The authors identify a need for region-stratified validation to establish whether identical underlying work is evaluated or credited comparably across groups.

This question concerns a potential source of measurement and platform bias in the impact measures used throughout the study.

Two questions follow as future work on the panel built here: whether equal underlying work is credited equally across visible identity and inferred world region, which requires its own region-stratified validation, and what the positional advantage lines up with before a career begins.
