Background

The centered Wicket Effect compares a player's realized wicket costs with an expected wicket effect computed using a league dismissal hazard conditioned on phase and innings. This deliberately coarse baseline is intended to measure departures from average dismissal behavior without absorbing player skill into a player-specific expectation.

The paper notes that the value function already tracks richer state variables, including wickets remaining and batter quality. Conditioning the hazard baseline on these variables could sharpen the compensator, but could also make the baseline closer to the evaluated player's own circumstances and thereby dilute the survival signal. The authors explicitly leave unresolved where to set this conditioning resolution.
