Determine whether SYK has a phase transition

Determine whether the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model exhibits a phase transition analogous to the replica-symmetry-breaking transition of the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model.

Background

The paper contrasts SYK with the classical Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model, whose Gibbs measure undergoes a replica-symmetry-breaking phase transition. The authors state that the absence of such a transition for SYK is conjectured rather than established. Resolving this question would clarify the thermodynamic structure of SYK and the temperature range in which learning and simulation methods may remain effective.

References

Our result is qualitatively different in part because it is conjectured that the SYK model does not exhibit such a phase transition.
