Determine whether ring-bearing occulting objects such as the hypothesized J1407b are gravitationally bound companions or unbound objects.

Background

The paper discusses the complex dimming of the young star J1407, initially interpreted as an occultation by the structured ring system of a bound planetary- or brown-dwarf-mass companion. The absence of a recurring eclipse and the non-detection of a consistent bound companion have motivated the alternative possibility that the ring-bearing object is unbound.

The authors identify the nature and binding status of such objects as unresolved and suggest that microlensing could provide a powerful observational technique for detecting them. If a J1407b-like object acted as a gravitational lens, its rings could produce extensive and complex structure in the microlensing lightcurve.
