Determine the physical mechanism underlying the lithium–rotation connection

Determine the physical mechanism responsible for the lithium–rotation connection in young stars and establish whether starspots alone can account for that connection.

Background

The study demonstrates that rotational changes in visible starspot coverage can modulate the apparent Li I 6708 Å equivalent width. However, this observational result does not establish whether the broader lithium–rotation relation reflects atmospheric line-formation effects, genuine abundance variations, structural changes, or other activity-related processes.

The authors therefore identify the underlying physical mechanism as unresolved, even though the paper establishes starspots as a major contributor to the observed lithium spread in NGC 2264.

References

Moreover, the physical mechanism behind the lithium-rotation connection still cannot be directly examined by starspots.
