Determine the distance and age of PWN DA 495

Determine the distance and age of the pulsar wind nebula DA 495, whose physical properties remain uncertain because no central pulsar powering the nebula has been detected and published distance and age estimates span substantially different ranges.

Background

DA 495 is a puzzling pulsar wind nebula lacking a detected central pulsar. The paper notes conflicting distance estimates, including approximately 1 kpc from H I absorption and values between roughly 2.4 and 3.3 kpc from interstellar absorption-distance relations. Its age is likewise uncertain, with published estimates ranging from a few kiloyears to more than 1 Myr. The authors adopt 1 kpc and 20 kyr as reference values, but their discussion indicates that a larger distance and/or older age may be required to reconcile the source with diffusion constraints and PWN population studies.

Although DA 495 was first detected decades ago, many of its properties remain unclear, mainly due to the absence of a detected central pulsar powering the nebula.
