Mount St. Helens Erupts

“Southwestern Washington, May 18, 1980. The north flank collapses and an ash plume boils 80,000 feet into the sky. Foreground shows the volcano disintegrating sideways, the great rock avalanche racing toward Spirit Lake; midground reveals timberlands flattened like matchsticks; Mount Adams and Mount Hood rise on the horizon dwarfed by the ash column shadowing whole counties.”
