Painting Lascaux
“A limestone cave gallery in the Dordogne valley, c. 17,000 BCE. Magdalenian artists grind ochre and manganese into pigment by the light of tallow lamps. Foreground shows a hand stenciled in red on cool stone and a stack of bone brushes; midground reveals a great bull silhouetted under flickering shadow; deeper in the gallery, aurochs and stags drift across the walls in herds.”
