Snoop Dogg’s Marijuana Magic
A fantasy in dactylic hexameter
Snoop Dogg, wizard of revelry, lifted his glittering goblet:
“Vodka is villainous! Banish it! Cannabis, grow in its waters!
Medical cannabis, easing the agony, calming the body!”
Whirling his fingertips, murmuring syllables, Snoop made a garden.
Out of the alcohol, cannabis blossomed in billowing garlands.
All of the revelers, giddy with wonder, applauded the wizard.
Nobody needed a reason but revelry: laughter was plenty.
Music and merriment! Under the moon they went merrily dancing.
What changed
GPT-3.5 never attempts dactylic hexameter. It writes bouncy rhyming couplets of uneven length (“And the party was lit, oh what a blast!”), which is fine as doggerel but ignores the one technical demand in the prompt. Astra gets the meter right in every line. “Out of the alcohol, cannabis blossomed in billowing garlands” scans as five clean dactyls and a closing trochee, the classical pattern, and the other seven lines hold it just as well. It also fixes “Dogg” and quietly handles the prompt’s odd medical-versus-recreational mix with “Nobody needed a reason but revelry.”
The 2023 poem does have one edge: its Snoop sounds a bit like Snoop. “Yo, what’s up with you?” is corny, but it has more personality than Astra’s “Vodka is villainous!”, which belongs to a wizard in an epic. Astra’s polysyllabic, Homeric register is what makes the meter work. Still, only one of these is the poem that was asked for.
