# N=2 Conformal Newton–Hooke Superalgebra

The \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra is a nonrelativistic superconformal Lie superalgebra adapted to Newton–Hooke spacetime, i.e. to nonrelativistic kinematics with a nonzero cosmological constant and characteristic time scale \(R\). In the modern literature it appears in two closely related forms. For general \(l\), it is the Newton–Hooke realization of the \(N=2\) \(l\)-conformal Galilei superalgebra, obtained by a Niederer-type transformation together with a linear redefinition of generators [1112.4924]. For \(l=\tfrac12\), it reduces to the \(N=2\) Schrödinger-type conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra that governs trapped conformal mechanics and, more recently, supersymmetric perfect-fluid models [1002.2290] [2605.19356]. Across these realizations, the algebra combines the bosonic conformal Newton–Hooke sector with \(N=2\) supercharges, superconformal charges, a \(u(1)\) \(R\)-symmetry, and fermionic partners of the spatial vector generators.

## 1. Bosonic conformal Newton–Hooke background

The bosonic core is the \(l\)-conformal Newton–Hooke algebra with generators
\[
H,\qquad D,\qquad K,\qquad M_{ij},\qquad C_i^{(k)},\quad k=0,1,\dots,2l,
\]
where \(l\) is an arbitrary integer or half-integer [2501.16781]. The generators \(C_i^{(0)}\), \(C_i^{(1)}\), and \(C_i^{(k>1)}\) represent spatial translations, Galilei boosts, and higher-order constant accelerations, respectively [1112.4924] [2501.16781]. The parameter \(R\) is the characteristic time scale, and the cosmological constant is written as
\[
\Lambda=\pm \frac{c^2}{R^2}
\]
in the bosonic Newton–Hooke setting [2501.16781].

In the finite-dimensional \(l\)-conformal Galilei presentation, \(H,D,K\) span \(\mathfrak{so}(2,1)\), with
\[
[H,D]=H,\qquad [H,K]=2D,\qquad [D,K]=K,
\]
while the vector tower transforms as
\[
[H,C_i^{(n)}]=n\,C_i^{(n-1)},\qquad [D,C_i^{(n)}]=(n-l)\,C_i^{(n)},\qquad [K,C_i^{(n)}]=(n-2l)\,C_i^{(n+1)}.
\]
Spatial rotations act in the standard way on both \(C_i^{(n)}\) and \(M_{ij}\) [1112.4924].

In the Newton–Hooke basis the bosonic commutators are deformed by \(R\). A standard form used in the fluid literature is
\[
[H,D]=H\mp \frac{2}{R^2}K,\qquad [H,C_i^{(k)}]=k\,C_i^{(k-1)}+\frac{k-2l}{R^2}C_i^{(k+1)},
\]
together with the undeformed relations for \([H,K]\), \([D,K]\), \([D,C_i^{(k)}]\), and \([K,C_i^{(k)}]\) [2501.16781]. For \(l=\tfrac12\), the vector tower truncates to translations and boosts, giving the ordinary conformal Newton–Hooke algebra used in \(N=2\) supersymmetric mechanics and fluid models [2605.19356].

A basic Newton–Hooke hallmark is that time translations no longer commute with spatial translations. In the bosonic Newton–Hooke algebra one has
\[
[H,P_i]=\pm \frac1{R^2}C_i,
\]
so the cosmological scale enters directly into both kinematics and dynamics [2501.16781].

## 2. Finite \(N=2\) superalgebra

The finite \(N=2\) supersymmetric extension of the \(l\)-conformal Galilei algebra adds the fermionic generators
\[
Q^\pm,\qquad S^\pm,\qquad L_i^{(n)\pm},\quad n=0,\dots,2l-1,
\]
and the bosonic generators
\[
P_i^{(n)},\quad n=0,\dots,2l-2,\qquad J,
\]
where \(J\) generates a \(u(1)\) \(R\)-symmetry [1112.4924]. The fermions are presented in a complex basis with reality conditions
\[
(Q^+)^\dagger=-Q^-,\qquad (S^+)^\dagger=-S^-,\qquad (L_i^{(n)+})^\dagger=-L_i^{(n)-},
\]
and \((\theta^+)^\dagger=\theta^-\) in superspace [1112.4924].

The defining \(N=2\) superconformal sector is
\[
\{Q^+,Q^-\}=2iH,\qquad \{Q^\pm,S^\mp\}=2iD\pm J,\qquad \{S^+,S^-\}=2iK,
\]
together with
\[
[H,S^\pm]=Q^\pm,\qquad [K,Q^\pm]=-S^\pm,\qquad [D,Q^\pm]=-\frac12Q^\pm,\qquad [D,S^\pm]=\frac12S^\pm,
\]
and
\[
[J,Q^\pm]=\pm iQ^\pm,\qquad [J,S^\pm]=\pm iS^\pm.
\]
The vector tower is supersymmetrized through
\[
[Q^\pm,C_i^{(n)}]=n\,L_i^{(n-1)\pm},\qquad [S^\pm,C_i^{(n)}]=(n-2l)\,L_i^{(n)\pm},
\]
and through mixed brackets involving \(L_i^{(n)\pm}\) and \(P_i^{(n)}\) required by closure [1112.4924].

For \(l=\tfrac12\), this finite superalgebra reduces to the standard \(N=2\) Schrödinger superalgebra [1112.4924]. In the formulation of [1112.4924], no explicit central extension is included in the finite superalgebra. By contrast, the bosonic \(\ell\)-conformal Newton–Hooke algebra admits the mass central extension
\[
[C_i^{(k)},C_j^{(m)}]=(-1)^k k!m!\,\delta_{(k+m)(2\ell)}\delta_{ij}\,m
\]
for half-integer \(\ell\) [2501.16781]. This difference reflects the fact that abstract finite superalgebras and concrete dynamical realizations are treated in different bases and with different extension data.

## 3. From flat superspace to Newton–Hooke superspace

A central structural fact is that the \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra is obtained from the flat \(N=2\) \(l\)-conformal Galilei superalgebra by a supersymmetric Niederer-type transformation plus a linear basis change [1112.4924].

For negative cosmological constant,
\[
t' = R\tan\left(\frac{t}{R}\right),\qquad x_i'=\left(\cos\frac{t}{R}\right)^{-2l}x_i,\qquad (\theta^\pm)'=\left(\cos\frac{t}{R}\right)^{-1}\theta^\pm,
\]
while for positive cosmological constant,
\[
t' = R\tanh\left(\frac{t}{R}\right),\qquad x_i'=\left(\cosh\frac{t}{R}\right)^{-2l}x_i,\qquad (\theta^\pm)'=\left(\cosh\frac{t}{R}\right)^{-1}\theta^\pm.
\]
The accompanying generator redefinition is
\[
H\to H\pm \frac{1}{R^2}K\mp \frac{1}{R}J,\qquad Q^\pm\to Q^\pm\pm \frac{i}{R}S^\pm,
\]
with the upper sign for negative cosmological constant and the lower sign for positive cosmological constant [1112.4924].

In this sense, the Newton–Hooke superalgebra is not a different abstract superalgebra: it is another realization of the same \(N=2\) \(l\)-conformal Galilei superalgebra [1112.4924]. The flat limit \(R\to\infty\) returns the flat superspace realization.

The same logic reappears in later dynamical settings. For bosonic fluids with arbitrary \(\ell\), the generalized Niederer map is
\[
t' = R\tan \frac{t}{R},\qquad x_i'=\left(\cos \frac{t}{R}\right)^{-2\ell}x_i,
\]
with corresponding density and velocity rescalings [2501.16781]. For the \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke supersymmetric fluid, the fermions acquire additional phase rotations under the Niederer map,
\[
\sigma'(t',x')=e^{i t/R}\sigma(t,x),\qquad \psi_i'(t',x')=e^{i t/R}\psi_i(t,x),
\]
and similarly for their conjugates with the opposite phase [2605.19356]. This suggests that the \(u(1)\) \(R\)-symmetry is intertwined with the Newton–Hooke time dependence already at the level of coordinate transformations.

## 4. Differential-operator realizations and the Hamiltonian basis

In flat superspace with coordinates \((t,x_i,\theta^\pm)\), the basic differential operators are
\[
H=\partial_t,\qquad D=t\partial_t+l\,x_i\partial_i+\frac12\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-}+\frac12\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+},
\]
\[
K=t^2\partial_t+2lt\,x_i\partial_i+t\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-}+t\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+},
\]
\[
Q^\pm=i\partial_{\theta^\mp}+\theta^\pm\partial_t,\qquad J=i\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+}-i\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-},
\]
with
\[
C_i^{(n)}=t^n\partial_i,\qquad L_i^{(n)\pm}=\theta^\pm t^n\partial_i,\qquad P_i^{(n)}=\theta^-\theta^+ t^n\partial_i
\]
in the finite tower [1112.4924].

After the Niederer transformation, the Newton–Hooke realization for negative cosmological constant acquires trigonometric time dependence. Representative generators are
\[
H=\partial_t-\frac{1}{R}\left(i\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+}-i\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-}\right),\qquad J=i\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+}-i\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-},
\]
\[
D=\frac12R\sin\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)\partial_t+l\cos\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)x_i\partial_i+\frac12\cos\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-}+\frac12\cos\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+},
\]
\[
K=R^2\left(\sin\frac{t}{R}\right)^2\partial_t+lR\sin\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)x_i\partial_i+\frac{R}{2}\sin\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)\theta^-\partial_{\theta^-}+\frac{R}{2}\sin\left(\frac{2t}{R}\right)\theta^+\partial_{\theta^+},
\]
and
\[
C_i^{(n)}=R^n\left(\sin\frac{t}{R}\right)^n\left(\cos\frac{t}{R}\right)^{2l-n}\partial_i
\]
with analogous formulas for \(L_i^{(n)\pm}\) and \(P_i^{(n)}\) [1112.4924]. For positive cosmological constant, the trigonometric functions are replaced by hyperbolic ones [1112.4924].

A later refinement modifies the fermionic Niederer transformation by phase factors
\[
\theta=\frac{e^{-i\tau/R}\vartheta}{\cos(\tau/R)},\qquad \bar\theta=\frac{e^{i\tau/R}\bar\vartheta}{\cos(\tau/R)},
\]
so that in the Newton–Hooke basis
\[
K_{-1}=\partial_\tau
\]
is a genuine time-translation generator and the supersymmetry brackets take the standard form
\[
\{G_{-1/2},\bar G_{-1/2}\}=2iK_{-1},\qquad [K_{-1},G_{-1/2}]=[K_{-1},\bar G_{-1/2}]=0
\]
for negative cosmological constant [1412.1751]. This construction was proposed precisely because earlier NH realizations produced a “weak supersymmetry” basis in which \(K_{-1}\) mixed with \(J/R\) [1412.1751].

## 5. Dynamical realizations

The algebra has several explicit dynamical realizations.

In many-body conformal mechanics on Newton–Hooke spacetime, the bosonic action for negative cosmological constant is
\[
S=\int dt\left(\frac12\dot x_i^\alpha\dot x_i^\alpha -V(x)-\frac{1}{2R^2}x_i^\alpha x_i^\alpha\right),
\]
with Noether charges \(H\), \(P^\alpha\), \(K^\alpha\), \(M^{\alpha\beta}\), \(D\), and \(C\) involving trigonometric functions of \(t/R\) [1002.2290]. The \(N=2\) extension introduces complex fermions \(\psi_i^\alpha,\bar\psi_i^\alpha\) and conserved charges \(Q,\bar Q,S,\bar S,J,L^\alpha,\bar L^\alpha\). For negative cosmological constant the quantum superalgebra contains
\[
\{Q,\bar Q\}=2\hbar H,\qquad \{S,\bar S\}=2\hbar C,
\]
and mixed brackets such as
\[
\{Q,\bar S\}=-2\hbar D-i\hbar J+\frac{2i\hbar}{R}C
\]
[1002.2290]. For positive cosmological constant the supersymmetry relation is modified to
\[
\{Q,\bar Q\}=2\hbar\left(H-\frac{2}{R}J+\frac{2}{R^2}C\right),
\]
because the ordinary Hamiltonian is not bounded from below in that case [1002.2290].

Higher-derivative mechanics provides the \(l\)-dependent realization. Applying Niederer-type transformations to free higher-derivative \(N=2\) superparticles yields Newton–Hooke and Pais–Uhlenbeck counterparts [1410.5335]. In the refined construction for the real \(N=2\) case, the resulting actions describe \(N=2\) supersymmetric Pais–Uhlenbeck oscillators with arithmetic frequency patterns fixed by \(R\): for half-integer \(l\), odd multiples \((2k-1)/R\) in the \(\chi_i\) sector and even multiples \((2k)/R\) in the fermionic and extra-bosonic sectors; for integer \(l\), the pattern is reversed [1412.1751].

A field-theoretic realization appears in perfect-fluid dynamics. For negative cosmological constant, the bosonic equations are
\[
\mathcal D\rho=-\rho\,\partial_i v_i,\qquad \mathcal D v_i+\frac{1}{R^2}x_i=-\frac1\rho \partial_i p,
\]
with conformal equation of state \(\gamma=1+\frac{2}{d}\) [2605.19356]. The \(N=2\) extension introduces complex Grassmann fields \(\sigma,\bar\sigma,\psi_i,\bar\psi_i\), deforms the Schrödinger supercharges by adding
\[
\frac{i}{R}\rho\psi_i x_i,\qquad -\frac{i}{R}\rho\bar\psi_i x_i,
\]
and adds to the Hamiltonian the terms
\[
\frac{1}{2R^2}\rho x^2,\qquad \frac1R\rho\psi_i\bar\psi_i,\qquad \frac{d}{2R}(\gamma-1)\rho\sigma\bar\sigma
\]
[2605.19356]. The conserved even charges are \(H,P_i,C_i,M_{ij},D,K,J,m\), the odd charges are \(Q,\bar Q,\Lambda_i,\bar\Lambda_i,S,\bar S\), and their graded Poisson brackets reproduce the \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra [2605.19356]. The same work emphasizes that the straightforward \(N=1\) supersymmetrization fails in the Newton–Hooke fluid, whereas the \(N=2\) construction succeeds [2605.19356].

## 6. Variants, extensions, and related structures

The \(N=2\) \(l\)-conformal Galilei superalgebra is not unique. Two inequivalent supersymmetrizations were constructed from the chiral \((2,2)\) and real \((1,2,1)\) basic \(N=2\) supermultiplets, denoted \(\mathcal G_{(2,2)}\) and \(\mathcal G_{(1,2,1)}\), respectively [1307.5259]. The real case coincides with the centerless superalgebra introduced earlier by Masterov, whereas the chiral case is new [1307.5259]. The Newton–Hooke realizations of both variants were then analyzed in higher-derivative mechanics [1410.5335].

The finite algebra also sits inside an infinite-dimensional extension. In the construction of [1112.4924], the generators \(K^{(n)},F^{(n)\pm},J^{(n)}\) form an \(N=2\) Neveu–Schwarz-type subalgebra, and the finite \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra is interpreted as the truncation
\[
\{K^{(-1)},K^{(0)},K^{(1)},F^{(-1)\pm},F^{(0)\pm},J^{(0)}\}
\]
together with the finite vector towers [1112.4924].

Several nearby but distinct superalgebras should be distinguished from the full conformal Newton–Hooke case. Three-dimensional Chern–Simons supergravity constructs an \(N=(2,0)\) extended Newton–Hooke superalgebra, and separately its Lifshitz and Schrödinger extensions, but not a single explicit cosmological-plus-conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra [1909.10745]. Two-dimensional nonrelativistic Jackiw–Teitelboim supergravity similarly uses an \(\mathcal N=2\) extended Newton–Hooke superalgebra \(sNH_2\), but without dilatation \(D\) and special conformal \(K\) [2204.09643]. In \(3+1\) dimensions, deformation theory yields non-empty branches of \(N=2\) super-extensions of centrally extended Newton–Hooke and Bargmann algebras, again at the non-conformal level [2010.01894].

A recurrent source of notation ambiguity is that in bosonic conformal Galilei geometry the symbol \(N=2\) can denote the level \(N=2\) algebra with dynamical exponent \(z=1\), not \(N=2\) supersymmetry [1104.1502]. In the supersymmetric literature on conformal Newton–Hooke, by contrast, \(N=2\) always refers to the number of supersymmetries.

Taken together, these results fix the standard picture. The \(N=2\) conformal Newton–Hooke superalgebra is the \(R\)-deformed, Newton–Hooke realization of nonrelativistic \(N=2\) superconformal symmetry. In abstract form it is inherited from the \(N=2\) \(l\)-conformal Galilei superalgebra [1112.4924]. In concrete form it governs trapped conformal mechanics [1002.2290], higher-derivative supersymmetric Pais–Uhlenbeck systems [1412.1751], and supersymmetric perfect fluids [2605.19356]. The precise presentation depends on \(l\), on the sign of the cosmological constant, and on the chosen basis for the Hamiltonian and \(R\)-symmetry, but the defining structural ingredients remain the same: the conformal Newton–Hooke bosonic sector, \(N=2\) supercharges and superconformal charges, a \(u(1)\) \(R\)-symmetry, and supersymmetric completions of the Newton–Hooke spatial generators.
