# Fargues–Scholze Correspondence Explained

The **Fargues–Scholze correspondence** is a geometric realization of semisimple local Langlands parameters through sheaves on the stack of $G$-bundles over the Fargues–Fontaine curve. Its organizing principle is
\[
\boxed{\text{\(G(E)\)-representations are sheaves on \(\Bun_G\), and Hecke eigendata are \(L\)-parameters.}}
\]
Here $E$ is a nonarchimedean local field with residue field $\mathbb F_q$ of characteristic $p>0$, $G/E$ is a connected reductive group, $\ell\neq p$, and $\widehat G$ is the Langlands dual group. The construction uses $\ell$-adic sheaves, geometric Satake, Hecke correspondences, excursion operators, and the spectral action of perfect complexes on the stack of $L$-parameters. The geometric framework and the assignment of a continuous semisimple parameter to every irreducible smooth representation are established; the full categorical local Langlands equivalence remains conjectural in general [2102.13459].

## 1. Geometric foundations

The Fargues–Fontaine curve replaces the quotient $\operatorname{Spec}\breve E/\phi^{\mathbb Z}$, whose étale fundamental group is essentially the Weil group $W_E$, by a relative curve over perfectoid spaces. For a perfectoid space $S=\operatorname{Spa}(R,R^+)$ over $\mathbb F_q$, one constructs
\[
Y_S=\operatorname{Spa}\bigl(W_{\mathcal O_E}(R^+)\bigr)\setminus V(\pi[\varpi]),
\]
with Frobenius $\phi$, and defines
\[
\boxed{X_S=Y_S/\phi^{\mathbb Z}.}
\]
The divisor space
\[
\operatorname{Div}^1=\operatorname{Spd}\breve E/\phi^{\mathbb Z}
\]
parametrizes degree-one Cartier divisors on $X_S$, equivalently untilts over $E$, and satisfies
\[
\pi_1(\operatorname{Div}^1)=W_E.
\]
Thus the curve supplies both vector bundles, which encode representation-theoretic data, and degree-one divisors, whose local systems carry Weil-group actions [2102.13459].

The Fargues–Fontaine classification identifies isocrystals with vector bundles. If $(D,\phi_D)$ is an isocrystal, its associated bundle is obtained by descent:
\[
\mathcal E(D,\phi_D)=
\bigl(D\otimes_{\breve E}\mathcal O_{Y_S}\bigr)/\phi.
\]
For an algebraically closed complete field $C$, every vector bundle decomposes as
\[
\mathcal E\simeq \bigoplus_{\lambda\in\mathbb Q}
\mathcal O_{X_C}(\lambda)^{n_\lambda}.
\]
For a reductive group $G$, a $G$-bundle is equivalently an exact tensor functor
\[
\operatorname{Rep}_E(G)\longrightarrow \operatorname{Bun}(X_S),
\]
and the moduli stack is
\[
\Bun_G(S)=\{\text{\(G\)-torsors on }X_S\}.
\]

The geometric points of $\Bun_G$ are classified by Kottwitz’s set $B(G)$:
\[
B(G)\xrightarrow{\sim} \Bun_G(C)/\cong,\qquad b\longmapsto\mathcal E_b.
\]
Consequently,
\[
\Bun_G=\coprod_{b\in B(G)}\Bun_G^b.
\]
The stratum indexed by $b$ is governed by the $\sigma$-centralizer $G_b$, and for basic $b$ one has
\[
\Bun_G^b\simeq[\ast/\underline{G_b(E)}].
\]
The derived category of sheaves on this stratum recovers the derived category of smooth $G_b(E)$-representations. In this way, $\Bun_G$ simultaneously contains the representation theories of $G(E)$ and of its relevant inner forms and Levi forms.

## 2. Sheaves and representation theory

For a $\mathbb Z_\ell$-algebra $\Lambda$, Fargues and Scholze construct the derived $\infty$-category
\[
D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)
\]
of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. For torsion coefficients this uses the étale theory of diamonds; for $\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-coefficients it requires solid sheaves in condensed mathematics because $\Bun_G$ is a $v$-stack with non-quasicompact stabilizers.

The category is assembled from the $B(G)$-strata. For each $b$,
\[
D(\Bun_G^b,\Lambda)\simeq D(G_b(E),\Lambda),
\]
where the right-hand side is the derived category of smooth representations. In particular, the geometrically trivial stratum yields a fully faithful embedding
\[
D(G(E),\Lambda)\hookrightarrow D(\Bun_G,\Lambda).
\]
A smooth representation $\pi$ of $G(E)$ is therefore regarded as a sheaf supported on
\[
\Bun_G^1\simeq[\ast/\underline{G(E)}],
\]
followed by extension to $\Bun_G$.

The compact objects of $D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)$ are characterized stratumwise: their restrictions to the categories $D(G_b(E),\Lambda)$ are compact and vanish for all but finitely many $b$. Compact objects on each stratum are generated by compact inductions
\[
c\text{-}\operatorname{Ind}_K^{G_b(E)}\Lambda
\]
for open pro-$p$ subgroups $K$. Universally locally acyclic objects correspond stratumwise to admissible representations. Bernstein–Zelevinsky duality extends to compact objects, giving an involutive duality
\[
\mathbb D_{\mathrm{BZ}}:
D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)^{\omega,\mathrm{op}}
\longrightarrow D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)^\omega.
\]

This is the representation-theoretic content of the geometrization: the entire collection of extended inner forms is encoded by one sheaf category, while the Harder–Narasimhan stratification records the decomposition into representation categories.

## 3. Hecke operators and geometric Satake

The global Hecke stack classifies tuples
\[
(\mathcal E,\mathcal E',D,f),
\]
where $\mathcal E$ and $\mathcal E'$ are $G$-bundles, $D$ is a degree-one divisor, and
\[
f:\mathcal E|_{X_S\setminus D}
\xrightarrow{\sim}
\mathcal E'|_{X_S\setminus D}
\]
is a modification meromorphic along $D$. It defines
\[
\Bun_G\xleftarrow{h_1}\Hglob_G
\xrightarrow{h_2}\Bun_G\times\operatorname{Div}^1.
\]
Bounded Hecke correspondences are indexed by dominant cocharacters $\mu$ and have proper maps on bounded pieces. Their associated functors are of the form
\[
Rh_{2,\leq\mu,*}\,h_{1,\leq\mu}^*.
\]

For a finite set $I$, the Beilinson–Drinfeld Grassmannian and local Hecke stack are
\[
\operatorname{Gr}_G^I\longrightarrow(\operatorname{Div}^1)^I,
\qquad
\Hloc_G^I=L^+G\backslash \operatorname{Gr}_G^I.
\]
The Satake category consists of complexes that are relative perverse, flat over $\Lambda$, universally locally acyclic over $(\operatorname{Div}^1)^I$, and have quasicompact support. Convolution is defined by
\[
A\star B=Rm_*(p_1^*A\otimes_\Lambda p_2^*B),
\]
while fusion, obtained by allowing legs to collide, supplies a symmetric monoidal structure.

The fiber functor is geometric cohomology:
\[
F^I:\operatorname{Sat}_G^I(\Lambda)
\longrightarrow \operatorname{Rep}_{W_E^I}(\Lambda).
\]
Tannakian reconstruction identifies the resulting dual group with $\widehat G_\Lambda$, equipped with its Weil action, up to an explicit cyclotomic normalization. The Satake equivalence is
\[
\boxed{
\operatorname{Sat}_G^I(\Lambda)
\simeq
\operatorname{Rep}_\Lambda\bigl((\widehat G\rtimes W_E)^I\bigr).
}
\]
For $V\in\operatorname{Rep}_\Lambda(\widehat G\rtimes W_E)$, the corresponding Satake sheaf $\mathcal S_V$ defines a Hecke functor
\[
T_V:D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)
\longrightarrow D(\Bun_G,\Lambda)^{BW_E}.
\]
The Weil action is geometric: it arises because the modification point varies over $\operatorname{Div}^1$, whose fundamental group is $W_E [2102.13459].

Geometric Eisenstein series provide a parallel mechanism for principal-series representations. For a quasi-split group with simply connected derived group, a normalized Eisenstein functor
\[
nEis(\mathcal F)
=
\mathfrak p_!\bigl(\mathfrak q^*\mathcal F\otimes IC_{\Bun_B}\bigr)
\]
is constructed from $\Bun_T$ to $\Bun_G$. The factor $IC_{\Bun_B}$ incorporates the half-modulus character and makes the construction compatible with Verdier duality and normalized parabolic induction. For sufficiently regular torus parameters, $nEis(\mathcal S_{\phi_T})$ is a Hecke eigensheaf with eigenvalue induced from
\[
\phi_T:W_E\to{}^LT.
\]
Its restrictions to unramified strata are expressed through normalized parabolic inductions and Weyl conjugates of the corresponding character [2209.08175].

## 4. Excursion operators and semisimple parameters

Hecke functors alone provide dual-group representations and Weil actions; their tensor structure produces excursion operators. Let $V$ be a representation of $(\widehat G\rtimes W_E)^I$, and let
\[
\alpha:\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell\to V|_{\widehat G},
\qquad
\beta:V|_{\widehat G}\to\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell
\]
be $\widehat G$-invariant maps. For $(\gamma_i)_{i\in I}\in W_E^I$, the associated operator on a Schur-irreducible object $A$ is
\[
A\xrightarrow{T_\alpha}T_V(A)
\xrightarrow{(\gamma_i)_{i\in I}}T_V(A)
\xrightarrow{T_\beta}A.
\]
By Schur’s lemma, this operator is scalar. The collection of scalars defines a character of the excursion algebra, and Tannakian reconstruction produces a unique continuous semisimple parameter
\[
\boxed{
\varphi_A:W_E\longrightarrow\widehat G(\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell).
}
\]
It is characterized by the identity
\[
\alpha\circ
\left(\bigotimes_{i\in I}r_V(\varphi_A(\gamma_i))\right)
\circ\beta
\]
for every excursion datum.

For an irreducible smooth representation $\pi$ of $G(E)$, viewed as a sheaf $A_\pi$ on $\Bun_G$, one defines
\[
\varphi_\pi:=\varphi_{A_\pi}.
\]
This yields semisimple $L$-parameters for all irreducible smooth representations without assuming the full local Langlands correspondence. The construction is compatible with local class field theory for tori, twisting, central characters, contragredients, products, Weil restriction, maps of reductive groups inducing adjoint isomorphisms, normalized parabolic induction, and the known correspondence for $\mathrm{GL}_n$ and its inner forms [2102.13459].

The associated spectral Bernstein center is
\[
\mathcal Z^{\mathrm{spec}}(G,\Lambda)
=
\mathcal O\bigl(Z^1(W_E,\widehat G)_\Lambda\bigr)^{\widehat G}.
\]
For suitable coefficients, Fargues and Scholze construct canonical maps
\[
\mathcal Z^{\mathrm{spec}}(G,\Lambda)
\longrightarrow
\mathcal Z^{\mathrm{geom}}_{\mathrm{Hecke}}(G,\Lambda)
\longrightarrow
\mathcal Z(G(E),\Lambda).
\]
The composite sends a function on the parameter stack to a central operator on smooth representations, and its action on an irreducible $\pi$ is evaluation at $\varphi_\pi$.

In equal characteristic, local-global compatibility with V. Lafforgue’s global correspondence identifies the Fargues–Scholze semisimple parameter of a local component with the semisimplified restriction of the global parameter. The same work identifies the Fargues–Scholze and Genestier–Lafforgue semisimple correspondences and supplies a canonical non-semisimple lift in positive characteristic [2301.09711].

## 5. The spectral action and the categorical conjecture

The excursion construction is part of a stronger action. Let
\[
\mathcal L_G=Z^1(W_E,\widehat G)/\widehat G
\]
be the stack of $L$-parameters. Under the condition
\[
\ell\nmid |\pi_0Z(G)|,
\]
Fargues and Scholze construct an action
\[
\boxed{
\operatorname{Perf}(\mathcal L_G)
\curvearrowright
D_{\mathrm{lis}}(\Bun_G,\Lambda)^\omega.
}
\]
For a perfect complex $M$ on $\mathcal L_G$, the action produces an exact endofunctor $M*$ on compact sheaves. The universal $\widehat G\rtimes W_E$-torsor identifies representations of the $L$-group with vector bundles on $\mathcal L_G$, and the action of these vector bundles recovers the Hecke operators:
\[
\operatorname{Rep}_\Lambda(\widehat G\rtimes W_E)
\longrightarrow
\operatorname{Perf}(\mathcal L_G)^{BW_E}.
\]

The categorical local Langlands conjecture predicts, for quasisplit $G$ with a chosen Whittaker datum, an equivalence
\[
\boxed{
D_{\mathrm{lis}}(\Bun_G,\Lambda)^\omega
\simeq
D^{b,\mathrm{qc}}_{\mathrm{coh},\mathrm{Nilp}}(\mathcal L_G).
}
\]
The spectral side consists of bounded coherent complexes with quasicompact support and nilpotent singular support. The Whittaker sheaf $\mathcal W_\psi$, corresponding to
\[
c\text{-}\operatorname{Ind}_{U(E)}^{G(E)}\psi,
\]
is expected to correspond to the structure sheaf of $\mathcal L_G$. Equivalently, the spectral-action functor
\[
\operatorname{Perf}^{\mathrm{qc}}(\mathcal L_G)
\longrightarrow D_{\mathrm{lis}}(\Bun_G,\Lambda)
\]
should be given by
\[
M\longmapsto M*\mathcal W_\psi,
\]
with a fully faithful right adjoint on compact objects.

The conjecture predicts that simple spectral objects consist of a Frobenius-semisimple parameter together with an irreducible representation of its centralizer or component group. This is intended to recover the internal structure of $L$-packets. The full equivalence, the matching of $t$-structures, and the complete description of singular support remain conjectural in the original framework [2102.13459].

Subsequent work proves the categorical statement on the supercuspidal locus for odd unramified unitary and unitary similitude groups, constructs the corresponding Hecke eigensheaves, and establishes the strongest Kottwitz conjecture, including non-minuscule cocharacters [2207.13193]. A generic categorical correspondence has also been constructed for generic Bernstein blocks of a large class of quasisplit groups, including quasisplit classical groups and $G_2$, through fully faithful functors into ind-coherent sheaves on arithmetic parameter stacks [2606.10149].

## 6. Comparisons, applications, and extensions

The semisimple nature of the original construction makes comparison with classical local Langlands a central problem. For $\mathrm{GSp}_4$ and its nonsplit inner form $\mathrm{GU}_2(D)$, the Fargues–Scholze parameters agree after semisimplification with the Gan–Takeda and Gan–Tantono parameters for all irreducible smooth representations when $L/\mathbb Q_p$ is unramified and $p>2$ [2109.01210]. For odd unramified unitary and unitary similitude groups, they agree with the correspondences of Mok, KMSW, and Bertoloni Meli–Nguyen [2207.13193]. Analogous compatibility has been proved for pure inner forms of unramified special orthogonal and unitary groups, with the Fargues–Scholze parameter also resolving the $O(2n,\mathbb C)$-conjugacy ambiguity in even orthogonal local Langlands [2503.04623].

For parahoric-spherical representations, the Fargues–Scholze parameter is characterized by formal properties and agrees at Frobenius with Haines’s parahoric Satake parameter:
\[
\boxed{
s(\pi)=\varphi_\pi^{\mathrm{FS}}(\Phi_F).
}
\]
The uniqueness argument reduces the correspondence to torus parameters, parabolic induction, central isogenies, products, Weil restriction, and trivial representations of anisotropic inner forms of $\mathrm{PGL}_n$ [2205.09152].

The framework also controls local Shimura varieties and local shtukas. Their compactly supported cohomology carries commuting actions of inner-form groups and Weil groups, and is expressed through Hecke functors on $\Bun_G$. This yields finiteness theorems, Kottwitz-type formulas, and cohomological realizations of $L$-parameters. The spectral action has applications to torsion vanishing for Shimura varieties: after localization at a generic Hecke eigensystem, perverse $t$-exactness of Hecke operators and the geometry of Igusa varieties produce bounds such as
\[
H_c^i(\operatorname{Sh}_K,\mathbf F_\ell)_{\mathfrak m}=0
\quad(i>d),
\qquad
H^i(\operatorname{Sh}_K,\mathbf F_\ell)_{\mathfrak m}=0
\quad(i<d),
\]
under the stated hypotheses [2309.08705]. For Hodge-type Shimura varieties, functorial Igusa stacks yield a sheaf on $\Bun_G$ whose spectral action gives compatibility with semisimple local Langlands, Eichler–Shimura relations, and further torsion-vanishing results [2408.01348].

The correspondence is compatible with close fields in the semisimple setting. For sufficiently ramified $p$-adic fields and the corresponding equal-characteristic local field, the mod-$\ell$ Fargues–Scholze correspondence is compatible with Deligne–Kazhdan equivalences on representations and parameters at bounded congruence level. With $\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-coefficients, the comparison is established after restriction to suitable wild-inertia subgroups [2407.07063]. In characteristic $p$, local-global compatibility and global shtuka uniformization recover a canonical full parameter from the semisimplified one and identify the Fargues–Scholze and Genestier–Lafforgue constructions [2301.09711].

The ordinary stack $\Bun_G$ sees extended pure inner forms. To incorporate all rigid inner forms, including nontrivial inner forms of $\mathrm{SL}_n$, an enlarged stack $\Bun_G^e$ is defined using the Kaletha gerbe over the Fargues–Fontaine curve. Its strata are indexed by an extended Kottwitz set $B_e(G)$ and contain the representation categories of the corresponding rigid inner forms. The enlarged dual group $\widehat G^e$ and parameter stack $\operatorname{Par}_G^e$ support an extended spectral action
\[
\operatorname{Perf}(\operatorname{Par}_G^e)
\curvearrowright
\mathcal D_{\mathrm{lis}}(\Bun_G^e,\Lambda).
\]
The torus case is proved, and for connected center with $H^1(F,Z_G)=0$ the extended categorical conjecture reduces to the original one [2608.02708].

For elliptic semisimple parameters, the spectral action yields canonical projectors indexed by $\overline S'_\varphi$-conjugacy classes in the component group quotient $\overline S_\varphi$. The resulting summands of the Fargues–Scholze packet character space are stable for the associated endoscopic data, extending the stable case to all semisimple classes [2503.00621]. More generally, conjectural constructions seek to recover Arthur packets from singularities of the parameter stack and to relate coherent or ind-coherent spectral objects to packet enhancements [2608.24341].

The established content of the Fargues–Scholze correspondence is therefore the geometric construction of $\Bun_G$, geometric Satake, Hecke and excursion operators, the spectral action, semisimple parameters, spectral Bernstein-center maps, and numerous comparison and cohomological theorems. The principal unresolved statement remains the full categorical equivalence between sheaves on the automorphic stack and coherent or ind-coherent sheaves with the prescribed nilpotent singular support on the parameter stack.
