# Conformal Robin Operator

A conformal Robin operator is a canonical first-order conformally covariant differential boundary operator acting on densities of arbitrary weight on the boundary of a Riemannian manifold. It generalizes classic boundary conditions by mixing Dirichlet and Neumann data and emerges intrinsically from tractor calculus. The conformal Robin operator serves as the first member of a broad family of higher-order conformally invariant boundary operators and is central in the formulation of conformal boundary value problems, spectral theory, and representation-theoretic constructions in geometric analysis.

## 1. Definition and Construction

On an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with smooth boundary $\Sigma = \partial M$, denote by $\cE[w]$ the bundle of conformal densities of weight $w$. Let $t$ be a defining function for $\Sigma$, so that $\Sigma = \{t=0\}$, $dt \neq 0$ on $\Sigma$; then $n_a = \nabla_a t / |\nabla t|_g$, and $n^a = g^{ab} n_b$ is the outward unit normal. The mean curvature of the boundary is $H = \frac{1}{n-1} \nabla_a n^a$. The conformal Robin operator $\delta_{g,w}$ is the first-order boundary operator given by
$$
\delta_{g,w} \, \sigma = n^a \nabla_a \sigma - w H \sigma, \qquad \sigma \in \Gamma(\cE[w]).
$$
For functions $f \in C^\infty(M) = \cE[0]$, $\delta_{g,w} f = n^a \nabla_a f - w H f$ [1802.08366].

This construction is realized naturally in tractor calculus: the standard tractor bundle $\cT$ splits as $\cE[1] \oplus T^*M[1] \oplus \cE[-1]$ in a choice of scale. The Thomas $D$-operator $D_A : \cE[w] \to \cT_A[w-1]$ is conformally invariant. The normal tractor $N^A = n_b Z^{Ab} - H X^A$ is conformally invariant of weight $0$ and satisfies $N^A N_A = 1$. Contracting gives $\delta_{g,w} \sigma = N^A D_A \sigma|_\Sigma$.

## 2. Conformal Covariance and Transformation Laws

Under a conformal rescaling $\hat g_{ab} = e^{2\Upsilon} g_{ab}$ with $\hat \nabla$ the corresponding Levi-Civita connection and $\hat \sigma = e^{w \Upsilon} \sigma$, the mean curvature, unit normal, and gradient transform as
\begin{align*}
\hat H &= e^{-\Upsilon}(H + n^a \nabla_a \Upsilon), \\
\hat n^a &= e^{-\Upsilon} n^a, \\
\hat \nabla_a \sigma &= e^{w \Upsilon}(\nabla_a \sigma + w \sigma \nabla_a \Upsilon).
\end{align*}
The conformal Robin operator accordingly transforms as
$$
\hat\delta_{\hat g, w} \left(e^{w\Upsilon} \sigma\right) = e^{(w-1)\Upsilon} \delta_{g,w} \sigma,
$$
so $\delta_{g,w}$ is conformally covariant of bidegree $(-w, 1-w)$ [1802.08366]. The operator retains its structure under conformal change, with the boundary parameter scaling as $\tilde \rho = e^{-w} \rho$ in the Robin boundary problem for the Laplace–Beltrami operator [2503.01451].

## 3. Family of Higher-Order Boundary Operators

The conformal Robin operator is the first member ($K=1$) in a family of conformally invariant boundary operators $\{d_K\}_{K \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}}$ on densities:
$$
d_K: \cE[w] \longrightarrow \cE[w-K]|_\Sigma,
$$
where, inductively, $d_{K+1}$ is constructed from $d_K$ via $d_{K+1} = N^A d_K D_A$, modulo normalizing factors in $w, n$ [1802.08366]. For $K=1$,
$$
d_1 f = n^a \nabla_a f - w H f = \delta_{g,w} f,
$$
and for $K>1$, $d_K$ generalizes both the classical Robin boundary operator and higher-order conformal boundary conditions, such as those arising in Chang–Qing theory.

## 4. Spectral Theory and Prescription of Robin Eigenvalues

On a compact manifold $(M^n, g)$ with smooth boundary, and $\rho \in C_+(\partial M)$, the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplace–Beltrami operator is
$$
\Delta_g u + \lambda u = 0 \quad \text{in } M, \qquad \partial_\nu u + \rho u = 0 \quad \text{on } \partial M,
$$
where $\nu$ is the outward unit normal. The spectrum is discrete, $\lambda_1 < \lambda_2 \leq \cdots \to \infty$, and arises from the quadratic form $q_\rho(u) = \int_M |\nabla_g u|^2 \, dV_g + \int_{\partial M} \rho u^2 \, d\sigma_g$.

Three main prescription theorems are established in [2503.01451]: (A) one can prescribe finitely many Robin eigenvalues and the volume via a suitable metric; (B) within a conformal class, prescribe multiplicities of eigenvalues; (C) prescribe finitely many distinct eigenvalues and volume inside a fixed conformal class. These results employ a Robin–Dirichlet reduction and quantum-graph constructions, such that large Robin parameter ($\rho \to +\infty$) drives the spectrum towards the Dirichlet spectrum, making eigenvalue prescription tractable.

## 5. Conformal Fractional Laplacian Boundary Problems and Self-Adjointness

For critical weights, notably the Yamabe weight $w = 1 - \frac{n}{2}$, the conformal Robin operator pairs naturally with the GJMS conformal Laplacian $P_2$,
$$
P_2: \cE[1 - \tfrac{n}{2}] \to \cE[-1 - \tfrac{n}{2}],
$$
yielding a formally self-adjoint elliptic boundary value problem with boundary conditions given by $(S, \delta_{g, 1-\tfrac{n}{2}})$, where $S(\sigma) = \sigma|_\Sigma$. For trivial kernel, the Dirichlet–to–Neumann map
$$
\mathcal{P}_1: \cE[\tfrac{1-n}{2}] \to \cE[-\tfrac{1+n}{2}], \qquad \mathcal{P}_1(f) = \delta_{g,1-\tfrac{n}{2}}(\sigma_f),
$$
arises, which to leading order is the pseudo-differential operator $(-\Delta)^{1/2}$, i.e., the $1/2$-fractional Laplacian [1802.08366].

## 6. Model Domains, Representation Theory, and Extremal Eigenvalue Results

On the standard conformal hemisphere $(S^n_+, g_0)$, with boundary the equator $S^{n-1}$, $H \equiv 0$; the operator simplifies to the normal derivative, $\delta_{g_0,w}(\sigma) = n^a \nabla_a \sigma$. The boundary construction yields symmetry-breaking intertwinors between spherical principal series representations from $\mathrm{SO}(n,1)$ to $\mathrm{SO}(n-1,1)$ [1802.08366].

In the context of planar domains, variational techniques show that the first Robin eigenvalue, under perimeter- or conformal-mapping normalized parameter, is maximized for the disk; corresponding inequalities for higher eigenvalues extend Szegő's and Weinstock's classical results [1811.05573]. The scale-invariant combinations constructed (e.g., $\lambda_k(\Omega; \alpha/L(\Omega)) A(\Omega)$) remain invariant under dilation and are optimal on the disk in the class of simply-connected domains.

## 7. Logarithmic Minimal Models and Lattice CFT Realizations

In logarithmic minimal models $\mathcal{LM}(p, p')$ on a strip, Robin boundary conditions are given as linear combinations of Neumann and Dirichlet conditions, parametrized by Kac labels $(r, s)$ on the lattice. The special Robin vacuum boundary, $(r, s-\tfrac{1}{2}) = (0, \tfrac{1}{2})$, is realized via a specific boundary field $\xi = -\lambda/2$, $\lambda = \frac{(p' - p)\pi}{2 p'}$, enforcing integrability. More general $(r, s)$ Robin conditions are constructed by fusion of $r$-type and $s$-type seams, introducing $w$ lattice sites and $d = s-1$ defects, with explicit formulas for boundary energies and finite-size corrections.

The continuum limit identifies the Robin operator as the primary boundary field with scaling dimension $\Delta^{p,p'}_{r,s-\tfrac{1}{2}}$ according to the Kac formula,
$$
\Delta^{p,p'}_{r, s - \tfrac{1}{2}} = \frac{(r p' - (s - \tfrac{1}{2}) p)^2 - (p' - p)^2}{4 p p'},
$$
and its character is the Verma character $\chi^{p,p'}_{r,s-\tfrac{1}{2}}(q)$ [1601.04760]. This construction unifies half-integer entries in the logarithmic Kac table and defines the lattice realization of these scaling fields.
