Markus and Katharina were two friends who were infamous for being late. They lived in a small town where everyone knew each other and their reputation for always being late preceded them. Despite this, Markus and Katharina always had a smile on their faces and a good excuse for why they were late. One day, Markus and Katharina were invited to a special dinner party at the mayor's house. The mayor was known to be very punctual and it was said that if anyone was late, they would not be allowed in. Markus and Katharina were determined to prove everyone wrong and be on time for the party. So, they left their house early and made sure to leave enough time to get ready and travel to the mayor's house. Despite their best efforts, they still managed to get lost on the way and arrived late. The mayor was not impressed and refused to let them in. Feeling embarrassed and disappointed, Markus and Katharina walked back home. They decided that they needed to change their ways and make an effort to be on time in the future. From that day on, Markus and Katharina were always early and their reputation changed from being infamous for being late to being known for their punctuality. The end.

Markus and Katharina were so infamous for being late that their friends invited them to dinner an hour before everyone else.

For once, they arrived exactly on time.

They stood outside the dark house, bewildered.

“We’ve got an hour,” Markus said. “Coffee?”

They returned two hours later.

What changed

The request was for a very little story, and only Astra took that seriously. GPT-3.5 produced four full paragraphs with a mayor, a locked door and a tidy reformation: “From that day on, Markus and Katharina were always early.” It’s a complete arc, but it reads like a fable that has had its fun removed. The lateness happens offstage (“they still managed to get lost”), and the ending simply cancels the premise that made the characters interesting.

Astra fits a whole comic structure into five lines. The friends’ trick of inviting them “an hour before everyone else” sets up the payoff, the dark house gives a nice beat of confusion, and “Coffee?” lets the pair stay exactly who they are. “They returned two hours later” lands because the reader does the arithmetic: an hour late anyway. It’s shorter, funnier and closer to the brief. GPT-3.5’s version isn’t wrong, just long and earnest about a joke premise.

From December 2022 to March 2023, visitors to LearnGPT, the earlier version of Emergent Mind, shared ChatGPT conversations they found useful or funny. On October 19, 2026, each prompt went to GPT-6 Astra exactly as it was shared: one message, no system prompt, default reasoning effort. Claude Opus 5.5 wrote the analysis under each pair after reading both answers. Original answers appear as the people who shared them pasted them. A few examples are left out because they depended on missing context or weren't appropriate to republish.
