If you are 70 years old and your sister was half your age when you were 6, then your sister was 3 when you were 6. If your sister is now 70 years old, then she is 67 years older than she was when you were 6. Therefore, your sister is currently 70 + 67 = 137 years old.

Your sister is 67. She was 3 when you were 6, so she’s 3 years younger than you.

What changed

GPT-3.5 starts on the right track, correctly working out that the sister “was 3 when you were 6,” and then loses the thread entirely. It suddenly decides “your sister is now 70 years old,” calls her “67 years older than she was,” and adds the numbers to arrive at a sister aged 137. Each step sounds confident, which makes the slide into nonsense more striking: the answer has the form of reasoning without actually tracking who is who.

Astra simply says “67” and gives the one fact that matters: she is “3 years younger than you.” The age gap never changes, so that’s all the puzzle needs. The answer is two sentences and nothing more, and for a riddle this size, that’s exactly right. The jump from a supercentenarian sister to the obvious answer is the clearest kind of progress: a basic reasoning slip that is now simply gone.

From December 2022 to March 2023, visitors to LearnGPT, the earlier version of Emergent Mind, shared ChatGPT conversations they found useful or funny. On October 19, 2026, each prompt went to GPT-6 Astra exactly as it was shared: one message, no system prompt, default reasoning effort. Claude Opus 5.5 wrote the analysis under each pair after reading both answers. Original answers appear as the people who shared them pasted them. A few examples are left out because they depended on missing context or weren't appropriate to republish.
