How can I start conversation in Italian?
GPT-3.5
GPT-6 Astra
To start a conversation in Italian, try a greeting followed by a simple question.
Casual — with friends or people your age
- Ciao! Come stai? — Hi! How are you?
- Ciao, mi chiamo [your name]. E tu? — Hi, my name is [your name]. And you?
- Piacere! Di dove sei? — Nice to meet you! Where are you from?
Polite — with strangers or in formal situations
- Buongiorno! Come sta? — Good morning! How are you?
- Buonasera! — Good evening!
- Mi chiamo [your name]. Piacere di conoscerla. — My name is [your name]. Nice to meet you.
A simple conversation
You: Ciao! Mi chiamo Alex. E tu?
Hi! My name is Alex. And you?
Other person: Mi chiamo Luca. Piacere!
My name is Luca. Nice to meet you!
You: Piacere! Di dove sei?
Nice to meet you! Where are you from?
If you’re still learning, this is useful:
Sto imparando l’italiano. Puoi parlare più lentamente, per favore?
I’m learning Italian. Can you speak more slowly, please?
What changed
The telling detail is register. GPT-3.5 mixes formal and informal Italian without saying so: “Come sta?” uses the polite Lei form while “Come ti chiami?” is casual, and a learner gets no hint that the choice matters. One line is also a word-for-word English translation: “Come va il tuo giorno?” is understandable but awkward, since Italians would say “Come va la giornata?” And “Qual è il tuo hobby preferito?” is a strange way to open a chat with a stranger.
Astra builds its answer around exactly that distinction, sorting phrases into Casual and Polite and keeping the formal “Piacere di conoscerla” consistent. The short sample dialogue shows how the lines connect in practice, and “Puoi parlare più lentamente, per favore?” may be the most useful sentence on either list. Astra is longer, but the extra material is practical rather than padding. GPT-3.5’s friendly “Buona fortuna!” is a nice touch, but its list leaves a beginner more likely to stumble.
